Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Plaza. Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Rockefeller Plaza How to Light a Christmas Tree

Yesterday, on the last day of autumn, the solemn ceremony of lighting the main US Christmas tree took place. A giant spruce tree 22.5 m high was installed in the central square of New York, Rockefeller Plaza, back in mid-November. It took workers several weeks to decorate this giant green beauty: an 8-kilometer-long garland of 30 thousand light bulbs was used for decoration, and the top of the tree was crowned with a huge star made of Swarovski crystals. The annual Christmas tree opening ceremony is an important tradition that began in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Like many years before, famous singers, actors and journalists took part in the ceremony of lighting the lights on the 75-year-old tree.

The nearly 12-foot, 3-ton Norway spruce featured as Rockefeller Center's 2018 Christmas tree. It was cut down outside a home in upstate New York on Thursday, November 8th.

The selection of the Christmas tree is carried out by the chief florist of the Rockefeller Center, Eric Pose. This process occurs throughout the year in several states. The minimum requirements for the dimensions of the tree are 20 meters in height and 10.5 in width. To transport it, a special sliding trailer is used, which is designed for a length of up to 38 meters.

The Christmas tree near Rockefeller Center in Manhattan has been installed since 1931, although the official history of installing Christmas trees dates back to 1933, since in 1932 the symbol of Christmas was not installed near the center, and since 1933 the ceremony of lighting the lights on the tree has been held annually.
