How to make a garland of flags for a children's birthday with your own hands? Three simple steps:

Simple, isn't it?

For those who want a little more complexity, a garland of flags and fabric. So, we already understand how to make a garland of flags with our own hands, but at what stage should we add fabric and what kind? Again, it's simple.

  1. From colored paper we cut out the shape of our flag - for example, a triangle.

  2. Cut out a smaller triangle from fabric and glue it onto paper;

  3. We sew or glue buttons and sequins on top;

  4. We sew flags onto the future garland with our own hands or using sewing machine. It is best to use braid or bias tape and place flags on it.

It is clear that paper garlands not very durable - they will last a maximum of one or two uses, but what if you want to make something more durable? For example, for kindergarten You can make a flag garland from fabric.

How to sew a garland of flags step by step:

  • We will prepare several colors of fabric;

  • make a pattern in the shape of a triangle (you can use triangles of different sizes);

  • transfer the pattern to the fabric (it is best to take two or three shades of fabric - a three-color garland looks very beautiful);

  • cut out the pattern and fold the triangles in pairs with the front side inward;

  • we pin it with tailor's pins or quickly baste it and then sew on two sides of each triangle on a machine (I also overlaid the edges) - leave a very small seam allowance, this will make the triangle sharper and more beautiful;

  • we turn out the triangles and make rough seams around the perimeter;

  • we baste the flags to the tape (in my case, a narrow strip of fabric); sew on a machine;

  • remove the basting; wash and iron the product.

Decorative braid with flags made in this way can be used at home and in the kindergarten, you can make special decor for the street (kids especially like this for the New Year).

Making Christmas garlands is fun and exciting! To make a beautiful and original garland you will need small candle lamps, narrow tinsel and a couple of jars of paint - special for glass or regular acrylic. The light bulbs are dipped one at a time in paint and dried on a cardboard stand (the bases can be wrapped in cling film to prevent them from getting dirty). Then the light bulbs are glued to the tinsel in a chaotic manner, and the unusual Christmas tree garland is ready!

Making another Christmas tree garland is also not too difficult - the main thing is to stock up on a template. For printing, you can use colored paper at once, or you can make one general template and copy it onto paper of any color. Printed or redrawn templates must be cut as shown in the diagram and strung on bright twine.

Print template:

A garland made of felt balls looks very cozy and very Christmas-like. You can do it together with your child - you just need help. In order to make such an interior decoration, you will need felt balls. No, not even that - A LOT of felt balls.

Making them is quite simple - take some wool for felting in your palm, wet it under the tap, and then lightly roll it into a ball. Add foam or soap and continue rolling. When the ball starts to form, you need to apply a little effort.

If the fur is capricious, try changing the water temperature several times - after a couple of changes with cold water when hot and back, the fibers begin to fall off. The future ball must be thoroughly rinsed from soap. The ball is ready when it becomes hard.

Make a lot of these balls - they can be the same color (then it’s better to take a contrasting thread for stringing) or different shades, and then just string them on a thread and a needle, and your cozy winter decor is ready. By the way, with such balls you can decorate a Christmas wreath on the door and christmas tree.

You can purchase a wide variety of flags and flagpoles in stores. However, it is much more interesting and more economical from a financial perspective to make flags quickly and easily with your own hands.

In our article we offer a detailed and accessible description of the process of creating flags from a variety of materials and using the most different techniques. You will find the most suitable way for you to make this original composition with your own hands.

How to make a simple flag design with your own hands: detailed description

In this version of making a flag, we will use fabric material as a base with our own hands. To work, you should prepare all the necessary materials and tools:

  • fabric of any color;
  • sewing threads to match the main fabric;
  • a wooden stick as the base of the flag;
  • ruler;
  • sharp scissors.

Now you need to take the correct measurements of your future flag from the fabric.

Measure the flag size you need on the fabric. In our example, it is thirty-two by thirty-seven centimeters in its finished form. This means that you need to add one centimeter in width (thirty-two centimeters plus two centimeters), for hemming the edge and three centimeters in length (thirty-seven centimeters plus one centimeter and another plus two centimeters for hemming the wooden stick).

Finish the edges using a hem seam with a closed cut, the seam width is 0.5 centimeters. Bend one side along the width by two centimeters (we had an edge on this edge, so we did not bend it), lay a line at a distance of 0.1 - 0.2 centimeters from the edge.

Then iron the seams from the wrong side. That's it, the final touch remains - thread the stick and your flag is complete!

The thread itself can be hung vertically. This technique is used by professional decorators when it is necessary to visually divide a room into several zones, for example, to separate a gaming area from a festive table.

What materials are garlands made from?

The most common option for decorating a room for a child’s birthday is a paper garland. It's very easy to make it with your own hands. To do this, you will need such universal materials for creativity as paper, cardboard, glue, stapler, etc. To create a garland, you can cut out various figures. They can be glued, painted, decorated with sparkles and beads, folded into origami models, stapled and even stitched.

Garlands are made not only from colored paper; some craftswomen use napkins for this. You can make very beautiful balls from them. To make a garland, it is better to use crumpled napkins.

In fact, decoration elements can be made from any materials at hand. Perfect for this:

  • food foil;
  • medical cotton wool;
  • scraps of multi-colored fabric;
  • candy wrappers;
  • corrugated paper “cups” for cupcakes or any other corrugation;
  • Balloons.

The choice of materials depends on imagination and skill.

Original and non-standard garlands

You can even make a garland out of food. Rings and pillows of ready-made breakfasts, chips, nuts, dried and candied fruits, gummies and souffles are suitable for this. You need to handle such a garland carefully so as not to spoil its appearance. The decoration must be stored in the refrigerator and used not as decoration, but, for example, for holding a competition.

Below is a photo of a garland for a child’s birthday (with your own hands), which is made from popcorn and breakfast rings.

This garland is not suitable for those who have animals in the house. In an effort to taste the delicacy, they can not only ruin the decoration itself, but also the surface being decorated.

Yarn decoration is another simple option for a garland for a child's birthday. Everyone knows how to make balls with your own hands from knitting threads. The photo below demonstrates the wonderful results you can get.

How to make flags for a garland for a child’s birthday with your own hands quickly and easily

You can make a flag element using ordinary scissors and a pencil. You just need to draw the necessary shapes and carefully cut them out. Then the flags are either fastened with glue or a stapler, or attached to a thread.

This simple manufacturing method takes a lot of time, and the process itself is monotonous and boring. You can simplify your task by purchasing a figured hole punch. There are many such devices sold in craft stores, with different shapes and sizes.

Even the simplest and most well-known ring garland can acquire a second life. Hole punch knives can be so complex that they can cut out real patterns, not just geometric figures. The following photo is an example of what can be done using a shaped hole punch.

A simple device will significantly reduce operating time. You will no longer need to draw and carefully cut along the lines, just bring the sheet up and press the pen.

Helpful Tips:

  1. You can make a ring garland by purchasing a ready-made paper ribbon with a pattern printed on it. You just need to cut it into strips and glue it together.
  2. For fabric flags, it is better to use felt, then you will not need to process the curly edges left by the hole punch.

How to securely fasten flags in a garland

You can assemble the garland using a thread attached to the surface. If elements need to be hung, then it is worth doing this before securing the base in place. The flags can be connected to each other using glue or a stapler without thread.

You can save time if you stitch the elements using a sewing machine. Only thick paper/cardboard or fabric flags are suitable for this. You can use the most ordinary threads or find shiny metal ones on sale. Thick paper figures will need to be placed under the machine foot one by one, without gaps. An example of work is shown in the photo below.

Garlands sewn this way will last longer. They are easier to store, faster to make, and they look no worse than store-bought decorative items.

Making a garland of candy wrappers for a birthday

Such a product will turn out beautiful only from whole, untorn candy wrappers. If they are torn, you can make base flags from cardboard and simply stick candy wrappers on them. For a garland of candy wrappers you will need:

  • many different candy wrappers;
  • strong thread - base;
  • glue or stapler.

Wrappers must be selected as similar in size as possible. If they are colorful and shiny, you can simply fold them in half, drop a little glue in the center and hang them on the base. If the wrappers are large enough and have beautiful scenes depicted on them, you can carefully fold one edge and glue the wrapper to the thread like a regular flag or fasten it with staples.

It's very simple and quick way which will save time and get excellent results. Children will be interested in looking at the wrappers and sharing their impressions of which candy tastes better.

Note: parents should take care of the availability of those same delicacies on the holiday table.

Making a flower garland from multi-colored napkins

Paper flowers can freshen up your surroundings just as well as real ones. The photo below shows an example of table decoration with flowers made from napkins.

You will need napkins or thin multi-colored wrapping paper, scissors, thread, glue, and wire. It is necessary to cut the napkins into strips and fold them like an accordion. The edge of the paper accordion needs to be cut using one of the methods suggested in the photo below and unfolded. Then the strip is twisted and tightly wrapped at one end with thread. You can dip the base of the flower in glue and place the bud on a thin wire for easy attachment to the base of the garland.

For big flowers It’s better to take not napkins, but special paper for florists. It comes in a variety of shades and has an interesting heterogeneous texture.

Create a garland of balloons

Paper balls hanging from the ceiling on strings different lengths, look very impressive, but even in a tight bunch, balls are a great way to decorate a space. You can see this in the photo example below.

The easiest way to make such balls is to buy ready-made ones in the store and string them on a thread. Making them is a very painstaking task. It is necessary to cut a large number of circles from colored double-sided paper. Then fold the circles in half and glue them one by one. The more circles, the more voluminous and “filled” the ball will be.

The presence of partitions depends on the method of gluing the halves of the circles to each other. The finished balls must be collected on a thread (base) and attached to the surface.

Such beautiful garlands can be made not only from paper, but also from thread and glue. It is necessary to inflate the balloons, generously coat them with glue and wind the threads. The blanks must be set aside until the glue dries. Then take a needle and pop the balloons. The result is fashionable and interesting decorations, for example, as in the photo below.

The final appearance of the product will depend on the method of winding the threads and their thickness. Instead of thread, you can take thick twine or thread from twisted napkins or newsprint. Then the finished balls will look like the following photo example.

You can also take at least 10 sheets of paper, fold them one to one, fold them into a small accordion and tie them in the middle. Then straighten the accordion separately for each sheet. The result will be a voluminous and beautiful ball, as in the photo below.

How to make unusual flags - hearts, bows and lanterns

Interesting elements can be obtained if you cut the ribbon into strips of different lengths and fasten them in a special way. The process of creating hearts can be seen in more detail in the photo below.

The element is a voluminous bow, perfect for girls' birthdays. It is not difficult to make, but you will have to draw and cut out the details by hand. For the bow you need to cut and fasten 3 parts. The manufacturing method is shown in the photo below.

The flashlight element is very similar to the ball, but it is even more difficult to complete. They don't need to be done big size The smaller they are, the more they attract the eye and delight others. To make lanterns you will need cardboard and scissors. First you need to cut out a large number of blanks, and then simply fasten them with glue or using cut out hooks.

As you can see in the photo, the decorations turn out very beautiful. Such balls are called flashlights because during the manufacturing process you can easily insert an LED light bulb into them.

Generalizing experience, or Complex designs from garlands

When decorating rooms, it is worth combining several types of garlands and various elements; this option will be the most advantageous. Clouds with rain from garlands have already been mentioned; the photo below shows an example of such a design.

You can also string long threads with small pieces of medical cotton wool and paper stars. By attaching them to the ceiling at small intervals and allowing them to fall all the way to the floor, you can get a fairy-tale curtain and use it to separate the resting place of parents and children. You can hang small surprises and gifts for kids on the garlands.

Even alternating very simple garlands creates space for the decorator. You can put letters on the flags, write the child’s name or a whole congratulation with pictures.

The easiest way to create a holiday decor is a garland for a child’s birthday, assembled with your own hands using 1 thread. It's easy to make and doesn't take much time.

Whatever parents come up with to decorate their child’s holiday, both adults and children will be able to have a lot of fun, as well as keep happy memories of the time spent together. One very unusual garland can be created throughout your life. It is necessary to hang a thread on the wall and attach photographs of family celebrations and joyful events to it.

When you start preparing for the holiday, be it New Year or a birthday, you always want to decorate your home in a special way every time. What can better decoration made with your own hands!?

For example, fabric flags! They will last for several years, and if the garland is simply bright (without a specific theme), then you can decorate any holiday throughout the year! And also, use it as a daily interior design for the nursery - and the holiday will never leave the house!

We start by cutting out our flags. Through small experiments and conducting “monitoring” on Google, I came up with the most, in my opinion, harmonious “formula” for the flag. An isosceles triangle with sides of 18 cm and a base of 12 cm. I made the pattern with seam allowances.

We glue the fabric with non-woven material. We make a pattern on cardboard (for reliability) and cut out the flags, it turns out very economical. I got 3.5 flags on a piece of fabric measuring 17 by 50 cm.

We cut out all our wealth)

Sew with a 0.5 cm seam allowance on both sides.

Cutting the corner

Turn it inside out and straighten the corner using a sushi chopstick.

And iron all the flags.

We cut off the corners.

We prepare the bias tape: cut it to the required size, and heat-treat the ends.

We leave the free end of the binding, I left 50 cm, maybe more, pin the first flag.

We sew the remaining tie (50 cm) and the flag itself. At the beginning and end of each flag, I made a small backtack of 2-3 stitches (for reliability).

When sewing a flag, we stop at the very end in order to determine the position of the next flag (I did this by eye, about 3.5 cm, but you can increase the distance to 5 cm - it works out well too). We sew a piece of bias tape without a flag, and move on to the next one (I don’t use pins anymore), don’t forget to make a tack at the beginning and end of each flag.

Next, we sew the entire garland in the same way, leaving a 50 cm tie at the end.
For my flag garland, I used 3 meter bias tape and 14 flags, sewing them at a distance of 3.5 cm. The garland turned out to be approximately 2 meters and two 50 cm ties.

In this tutorial I suggest you create a simple beautiful greeting banner using Photoshop.

A text banner is a very simple and at the same time functional image. You can always personalize this image, either by making small changes and creating greeting card for any holiday!

So as a result of the lesson we will get a high-quality blank that everyone can use in various projects.
Let's begin!

To complete this tutorial we will use:
- program: Photoshop CC;
- time spent: 30 - 90 minutes;

Step 1

Create a new document:
- size: 10 x 11 cm;
- resolution: 300 pixels\inch;
- color mode: CMYK

Set up a ruler in your workspace: View - Ruler(View - Rulers (Ctrl/Cmd + R)). Then you need to add a binding: View - Snap to - Guides(View - Snap To - Guides).

In order to set the measurement units of the ruler, right-click on the vertical or horizontal scale of the ruler and select the desired unit of measurement in the list that appears. In this tutorial I will use centimeters (cm).

Let's place the guides! Hold down the left mouse button, point it at the border of the vertical ruler and drag the first guide. Place it 1 cm from the left edge of the canvas.

Using a similar workflow, add vertical and horizontal guides as shown in the example below.

On the toolbar, activate the tool Polygon(Polygon Tool). Set the number of sides to 3. Hold down the Shift key and draw an equilateral triangle on a new layer. Place the shape as shown in the image below.

Translator's note: draw in layer-shape mode

Then activate the tool Arrow(Direct Selection Tool). Click on one of the corners of the triangle.

Using the triangle's anchor points, drag the top corners to the intersection points of the guides.

Place the vertex of the triangle at the intersection of the central and lower horizontal guide. Thus, you get a figure located clearly in the center of the canvas.

Step 2

Double-click with the left mouse button on the layer with the triangle. This will take you to the menu Layer Style. In this menu, go to settings Pattern overlay(Pattern Overlay).

Use any pattern you like from the set “ Colored paper" Once you decide on the type of pattern, you can adjust Scale(Scale) texture, in this example, I use a scale value of 70%.

You can also change the location of the pattern. To do this, simply move the cursor over the working canvas with the pattern, hold down the left mouse button and drag the pattern.

If you do not use the suggested “Colored Paper” set, you can decorate the triangle differently. Select the image you want to place on the triangle. Drag it to the main working canvas and place it above the triangle layer. Apply this image as clipping mask(clipping mask) to the layer with the triangle.

Activate the tool Ellipse(Ellipse Tool). In the tool settings, go to Geometric panel(Geometry Settings) and check the box next to " From a cent"(From Center).

Hold down the key Shift, hover your mouse over the center guide and draw a circle inside the triangle. You can choose the size of the circle arbitrarily, and later, if necessary, adjust it.

Refer to the circle shape settings panel. Add a stroke along the outline of the circle, stroke color - # 59c2aa, stroke size (size) - 3 pt, stroke position - outside (outside). Also change the fill color of the shape itself to # fef5e0.
If you're using a different pattern or texture for your triangle, you can experiment with different stroke and fill colors for the circle.

Translator's note: If you are using another version of Photoshop, you can add a stroke to your circle by going to the Layer Style menu. In this menu, go to the “Stroke” settings and enter the required values. In order to change the fill color of the shape itself, double-click on the circle shape color thumbnail and select a new shade.

Duplicate the circle layer. Then go to Editing - Path Transformation - Scaling(Edit - Transform Path - Scale).

Now let's reduce the size of the copy shape. In order not to lose proportions and transform from the center of the circle, press and hold the key combination while scaling Shift +Alt. When you get the desired size of the copy circle, press the Enter key to apply the changes.

Don't forget that when working with shapes, you can adjust their settings and appearance. For example, for a new shape we can change the type of stroke by selecting the stroke type in the settings panel - dotted.

Step 3

Go to the triangle layer and create a copy of this layer.

Standing on the copy layer with the triangle, go to Editing -Free transformation(Edit - Free Transform). In the settings panel, set the transform point as shown in the image below.

Then go to again Editing - Transform - Flip Vertical(Edit - Transform - Flip Vertical). Press Enter to make changes.

Activate the tool Rectangle(Rectangle Tool). In the settings, set the function " Subtract from Shape Area"(Subtract Front Shape). Then, standing on the inverted triangle layer, draw a rectangle that covers almost the entire area of the triangle, leaving only a small part at the base of the triangle.

Click on the "Path Operations" icon and select the action " Combine Components"(Merge Shape Components).

Activate the tool Arrow(Direct Selection Tool (A)). Using this tool, activate the upper anchor points of the trapezoid. Then go to Editing - Transforming - Scaling(Edit - Transform Points - Scale). While holding down the key combination Shift +Alt Zoom out the trapezoid a little. To apply the new scale, press Enter.

Reduce the fill of the trapezoid layer to 0%, and then in the settings add a stroke: stroke type - dotted; position - inside; size - 1 pt.

Now you have a nice template for a holiday flag that you can print. Thanks to the fact that we created a spine outlined with a dotted line, the flag can be easily hung on the tape by bending and gluing the spine!

Step 4

Now let's start filling out the checkbox. For this I will use the tool Horizontal text(Horizontal Type Tool) and the font “Sofia”. In the text settings, set the letter size to 150 pt and color # 399782 . Write the desired letter in the center of the circle. Instead of a letter, you can add some shape or symbol.

Merge all layers (except the background) into a single group. Duplicate this group. Now you can expand the copy group and make the necessary changes: replace the letter, select another pattern from the “Colored Paper” set, etc...

In the same way, you can create the required number of checkboxes with different symbols.

At this stage, you can already use the result for printing!
In addition, you can apply our work to various collages.

Step 5

Open the Fence texture in Photoshop. Activate the tool Frame(Crop Tool) and crop the texture to your liking. You can also postpone cropping until the final step and use the Crop Tool when the work is completely ready.

Standing on the wood texture layer, go to Image - Correction - Levels(Image - Adjustments - Levels). Change the Highlights slider to 245.

Select a tool Feather(Pen Tool). In the settings of this tool, set the drawing mode to “Path”. Draw a curve as shown in the example below.

If you need to adjust the shape of the curve, use the tool Arrow(Direct Selection Tool (A)).

Activate the tool Brush(Brush Tool). Set the following settings for the tool: size - 3 px, hardness - 100%, color - #f0f0ee.
Create a new layer on top of the background one, name this layer “Thread”. Then activate the tool Arrow(Direct Selection Tool (A)). Right-click on the previously created arc path. In the submenu that appears, select “ Stroke the outline"(Stroke Path), and set the stroke tool to "Brush". To remove the visibility of the outline, press Enter.

Now we will place our holiday flags.
In order to do this, return to the document with the checkboxes and select all the groups. Then go to Layer - Duplicate Layers(Layer - Duplicate Layers). Move the copies of the groups into the wood grain document.

In order to make the work more comfortable, we will combine each group into a single layer. To do this, stand on one of the groups with a flag and go to Layer - Merge Layers(Layer - Merge Group ( Ctrl/Cmd+E)). Repeat the merge for each group.
When you get layers instead of groups, select all the layers with checkboxes and scale them ( Editing - Free Transform(Edit - Free Transform ( Ctrl/Cmd + T)). Change the size of the flags to your liking. To apply the transformation, press Enter.

Then you need to rotate each flag and place it on the string. To do this, also use the transformation ( Ctrl/Cmd + T)).

Step 6

Let's add a little volume. To do this we will use the Layer Style menu. Stand on the layer with the first flag and double-click on it with the left mouse button. Enter the settings as shown below:

Inner glow(Inner Glow)

Shadow(Drop Shadow)

Now the edge of the checkbox looks better:

Right-click on the layer to which we just applied layer styles. In the submenu that appears, use the function “ Copy Layer Style"(Copy Layer Style). Then select all the remaining layers with checkboxes, right-click on them again and select the function “ Paste Layer Style"(Paste Layer Style).

Using the menu Layer Style(Layer Style), add a shadow falling from the thread.

Merge all the checkbox layers into a single Flags group.

Step 7

Click on the "Create New Adjustment Layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and add an adjustment layer Gradient map(Gradient Map).

In the gradient settings, set the colors to #bbb07 and #ffffff. Change the blend mode of the Gradient Map adjustment layer to Multiplication(Multiply), and lower the opacity to 20%.

Let's add another adjustment layer called Gradient(Gradient).In the settings, set the gradient type - radial, scale - 300, angle - 90, transition color from transparent - to # a7a297 - to # b3a78c.

Set the Blend Mode of the second adjustment layer to Linear dimmer(Linear Burn), and opacity (opacity) - 20%.

Step 8

Press the combination Ctrl / Cmd + click on the layer thumbnail with a checkbox to create a selection along the outline of the triangle.

Now hold down the key combination Ctrl +Shift + click on the next layer thumbnail with a checkbox in order to add another selection to the existing one.

Using a combination Ctrl +Shift + click Using the layer thumbnail, create a selection along the outline of all the checkboxes.

Create new group inside the Pennants group and name it Texture Overlay. Then click on the "Add Layer Mask" icon. As a result, a layer mask filled with black will be added to the group, and the previously selected area with checkboxes will be displayed in white.

Open the "Paper" image and place the texture inside the "Texture Overlay" group. As necessary, scale the texture so that it covers all the flags. Change the blending mode of the paper layer to Replacement with light(Lighten), and lower the opacity (opacity) to 50%.

Add an adjustment layer above the paper layer Levels(Levels).

In the midtone level settings, lower the value to 0.7, this will make the image more saturated.

Also, you can go back to the wood texture layer and adjust it a little using the tool Spot Healing Brush(Spot Healing Brush Tool). In the tool settings, set a round, soft brush with a size of 30 px. and hide areas that seem unnecessary to you. This step is optional.

This concludes my lesson! I hope you find it useful!
