How to weave a tray from newspaper tubes

We cut paper rectangles of approximately 10x30 cm. We put the spoke on a paper blank at an angle of 45 degrees, tightly wind the paper and glue the corner. Carefully take out the knitting needle. The number of tubes is impossible to provide, and, if necessary, you can refine the desired number.

We paint the finished tubes in the desired color. In this workshop, a wood stain is used for coloring. Another option is to use food coloring, with the help of which the color palette will increase.

When painting the tubes, dip them in paint for a couple of seconds, take them out onto a newspaper or oilcloth and dry them well. It can be dried on a battery, or in natural conditions, this, of course, will last longer. Also, it is worth recalling the rubber gloves, without which you should not start dyeing.

We make 16 prepared painted tubes crosswise 4x4, additionally strengthen with PVA glue. This is the basis of the tray, in fact, the riser tubes, which we will braid with additional tubes.

We fix two additional tubes with glue between the tubes at the intersection and begin to move in figure eight, braiding around 4 risers (two rows). Next we braid 2 risers (three rows).

If during work one of the tubes ends, it can be increased. To do this, take an extra tube and connect them with the ends, pushing the tip of the tube thicker thinner, you can additionally coat with glue.

The next row is finishing. We carry it with tubes of a different color.

We knit another row with brown tubes, and the next 10 rows will be braided by each riser. Since during operation the diameter of the tray increases, we need to increase the risers (through one).

Fold in half a sheet of newspaper into 4 equal parts on the short side, and then divide the fold line. You should get strips about 5.5 cm wide. 80-100 pieces of such strips will be needed. To create the frame, you can also use office paper.
Take one of the strips and apply a thin layer of glue on the long side. Screw the strip tightly onto the needle starting from the angle opposite to where the glue was applied.
Press the corner so that the tube does not unwind, take out the knitting needle and wait until the glue completely dries. Make 30 pcs.
Squeeze the sharp end of the tube and lubricate it on one side with glue.

Now stick the tubes along the marks to the bottom of the tray, pressing them well. Then, having filled the entire perimeter, apply glue to the bottom, carefully lubricating the fastening points of the tubes. Attach another cardboard part on top and place the blank under the press for at least six hours.

Glue the two newspaper tubes together in length. Bend this part to get two equal parts, and start braiding the posts from the corner.

Stand with the next row in a row and bend it up. Continue in a circle until you reach the last tube.

It remains to prime and color the tray in the color you like. For primer, mix water, glue and white emulsion paint in white in equal proportions, and then apply this composition with a brush on the entire surface of the product. Then add gouache to the primer and paint over all surfaces except the bottom. When the paint has dried, cover your creation with two layers of acrylic varnish so that it can be washed. Materials and tools:

Old newspapers, or A4 paper, or window paper, one sheet of any color magazine
   PVA glue
   Clay "Titan" or "Master"
   Acrylic colors: white, baked milk, ultramarine, dark gold
   Bamboo skewer with a diameter of 2.5-3.0 mm

Working process:

First we make the tubes - this will be our “vine”, for this we cut off strips 7-8 cm wide from the newspaper, from the side where there is a white edge.

With our left hand we hold a newspaper strip, on it we put a wooden skewer at an angle of 45 degrees from the side of the letters, an unpainted strip remains on the right side. We start tightly wind the newspaper on a wooden skewer, when we twist the tube almost to the end, apply a little PVA glue to the remaining free tip, scroll the tube to the end. Thus, the tip of the newspaper will stick. The tube is ready, and note that it turned out to be white, all the letters remained inside.

Pay special attention to how you twist the tubes, how accurately and tightly they are obtained, since this is very important at the first stage of manufacture. The final look of your product depends on the quality of twisting. The thickness of the wooden skewer also matters. The thinner the skewer, the thinner the tube.
Next, we will prepare corrugated cardboard - this will be the bottom of our tray, cut with scissors 2 identical pieces 36x24 cm in size, but you can make a tray in its own dimensions.

On one part, mark the points for future holes for the main racks of the tray. This is an even amount, in our MK 40 racks.

To do this, we calculate the distance between the posts so that it is 2.5-3 cm. I can note that from our practice of weaving, this is a more acceptable distance for a dense and durable woven fabric. 0.6-0.7 mm must be retreated from the edge of the part. After marking, we take a mini-drill (you can use the engraver "Dremel") and make holes in the designated places

The second detail of the future bottom remains unchanged. For racks I use short tubes.

Next, apply “Titan” glue to the ends of the racks, press them to the cardboard bottom and fix with a clothespin.
So nothing will shift, you can dry on a flat surface. When the racks are glued, apply PVA glue to the bottom of the cardboard and press the second part tightly, you can also use clothespins. So, we have to get a mini “sandwich”. The ends of the short racks should remain inside and not visible. We dry it again on a flat surface, you can use any load that we place on top of the mini “sandwich” of the bottom. The hitch in this case will be much better. Dry for at least 12 hours.

When the drying process is completed, cut the same two parts from the textured wallpaper, in our case, the paper wallpaper remaining after the repair. The size of the parts must coincide with the bottom of our product 36X24 cm. You can glue two parts at once onto PVA glue, we also use linen clothespins (along the bottom edge). Sushim

While the paint is drying, we will make an interesting finish for the future handle of the tray.

To do this, take any sheet from a bright colored glossy magazine, mark it into triangles, where one side will be 3 cm, and the opposite side will disappear in the center, cut with scissors and from the resulting triangles, twist the beads. We pick up a pen, pencil, etc., in thickness so that you can then put a bead on a rack.

We wrap our triangle on a round object from a wide cut to a narrow one, glue the tip with PVA glue. Sushim. It turned out very nice beads. The longer the paper triangles are, the more belly the beads will be.
Now you need to prepare a napkin for decoupage the bottom of the tray. Carefully separate all the light layers of the napkin from the color layer. We put the napkin on the ironing board, spray it with hairspray and iron the hot iron through the white paper. So do 2-3 times. Thus, an invisible film forms on the colored layer of the napkin, the napkin will become much stronger and more elastic. You can more accurately stick the motive to the product.

In this case, we will prepare two identical napkins from which to tear out motives with our hands.
We will glue motives to the surface of the future bottom using the “file method”.

Since we will do direct decoupage, put the torn motif FRONT SIDE on the file! The next step is to gently pour water onto the file, you can simply "with your hands." Pour enough water so that the napkin gets wet and swims a little in a puddle of water. We straighten the fragment of the napkin, due to the fact that it is in the water and specially prepared, the motif does not tear, stretches a little and can be easily aligned with the file. Shake off excess water. We visually outline where this fragment will be located.

We attach the file with the motive to the product, lightly stroke it with the hands on the file, expelling excess water and air bubbles. We make sure that everything is perfectly and accurately removed the file, the fragment itself remains on the product.

Then we take a fan brush and diluted PVA glue (1: 1) with water, we coat the motive. Sushim

We will also deal with other fragments.
Since the texture of the wallpaper with a convex pattern, then decoupage on an uneven surface gives an interesting “highlight”.
Then we take two long tubes, and glue to any main small rack of the tray. The main stand should be in the middle, between the tubes. It turned out 2 additional tubes, so we will weave them with a “rope” (see the “rope” scheme). The first row of weaving should be located as close as possible to the base of the bottom in order to hide all irregularities

Use linen clothespins again, clamp your weaving in different places, then the product will be flat.

After the first row, it is necessary to raise the small racks vertically. It is advisable to choose some basis on which you will weave. It can be a box, or a big book. Then your product will have a smooth weave and a beautiful look. We are also constantly building up our tubes (vine), which weave. To do this, cut the ends of the tubes a little, insert the thinner tip a little while scrolling into the wider

Everything should look neat, the place of extension of the tubes should be little noticeable. Usually you need to “twist” it until you feel that everything has grown together firmly. If this did not happen, then put a drop of glue "Titan" or "Moment" into the place of building. This glue dries quickly and the paper does not get wet.

When weaved 4 full rows, put harvested beads on vertical stands

We bring vertical racks outside, we start 1 rack for the 2nd, 2nd rack for the 3rd and so on. We carefully look at the photo, everything is visible there. When the 1st row of closure ends, we wind the last tube through the 1st tube out

Now we will bend the tubes into the inside of the product

Next, we cut off all the extra ponytails of the uprights, while abundantly lubricate with PVA glue all surfaces and joints, we fasten everything with linen clothespins and dry for a day until it dries completely.

Now it remains to talk about the decor. Of course, you noticed that the beads are almost red-yellow-white. This does not harmonize with our “grape”.

Therefore, we take ultramarine acrylic paint and paint over our beads. They become a heterogeneous blue-violet hue - this is very suitable for our "grape". Next we look, newsprint has an unsightly gray tint, this can also be fixed. We take acrylic paint the color of baked milk, dilute it to the density of liquid sour cream, and carefully paint over our product from all sides. We also paint a little with the same paint between the motives, since there are white gaps. If necessary, after drying, repeat the painting. Dry again. We are convinced that everything suits us, that all the places of interweaving are stained, that the color of the wicker is uniform.

Now decorate the place where the tray closes. Firstly, this can hide the flaws of our weaving (if any), and secondly, this will achieve completeness in the design of the tray. Take a little paint of ultramarine color, (do not dilute it with water!) A piece of a large-pore sponge (you can use a sponge as for washing dishes). Dip a little sponge into the paint, then press the palette several times, this eliminates excess paint from the sponge. And then gently tampon the outline of the tray. The paint lies on the bulges of the weave and the effect of frost is obtained. We critically look at our product and add a little acrylic dark gold paint in the same way of “tamping”. We pass a little through the leaves, grapes, the background of the bottom of the wattle. Also add some acrylic gold paint over the beads and the fringing of the tray. Now our product has played in all its glory!

Now it remains to consolidate our result. We take any water-based acrylic varnish (it is odorless), cover our tray 2 times, with an intermediate drying of 2 hours.

Since the tray will be used frequently, the protective coating must be durable and durable. The “Tsapon” finish varnish will help us with this; this varnish can withstand various temperature differences, including high.
Using this varnish, take safety measures, it is necessary to turn on the hood or open the window, for weathering harmful fumes. The varnish dries very quickly, does not turn yellow, the smell is not very strong. After use, rinse several times in running water with soap, this will be enough.

But you can make a solid bottom - it is created from two circles cut from thick cardboard. The vertical posts of the craft are glued to the lower circle (they need to be flattened a little at the attachment point), and from above they are fixed with another circle with glue.
As a basis for crafts, you can use a jar, a vase, a glass or other container, suitable in size. The base is installed on the bottom, and the racks are fixed in its upper part with clothespins for evenness of the product.
When the bottom, the base and the guides are in place, you can begin to braid them with a paper vine.
