Ottoman knitted from knitted yarn. We sew and knit round ottomans

Good afternoon friends!

From the large round pillows in the last publication, today we will move on to a more voluminous thing and make a pouf with our own hands. I will have a selection of photos of ideas for knitted poufs with diagrams and descriptions: a round and cylindrical crocheted pouf, a ball-shaped pouf and a square knitted pouf.

Knitted poufs in the interior

A pouf is more than a pillow; it is a universal piece of furniture that can be round, cubic or cylindrical. And how many functions knitted poufs can perform in the interior!

First of all, it is an additional cozy place to sit. Small poufs can be hidden under the table and pulled out as needed. Some people like to keep poufs next to their bed, sofa or chair. Others can be brought to the forefront of the room, giving it a special charm. Depending on the purpose, you can choose the desired size of pouf for the living room.

You can make an excellent table out of a pouf by placing a tray, plates and other essentials on its surface. This is especially true for those who like to sit with a cup of coffee in front of the TV screen. You can even make a modular coffee table by placing a glass or other surface on two side-by-side ottomans, or use one large ottoman.

Soft knitted poufs are an ideal solution for a children's room; you can play with them, jump with them, and put books and toys on them.

Poufs are a wonderful footrest. They can be easily moved around the room and placed either closer or further from the armchair or chair.

If such a pouf is in the bedroom next to the bed, you can throw a robe on it. And in the hallway it’s convenient to sit down while putting on your shoes.

And in general, designers consider knitted poufs to be simply a fashionable piece of stylish interior design.

How to make a pouf with your own hands

If I’ve convinced you and interested you, let’s get down to business. DIY pouf - it's easy! You just need to knit a simple cover and insert a pillow made of lining material into it, stuffed with some kind of filler.

Yarn

For knitted poufs, wool or half-woolen yarn, acrylic in half with wool, 100 m thick / 50 g in a skein, is best suited.

Depending on the size of the ottoman, you may need from 500 g to 1600 grams.

It is very popular now to knit from knitted yarn and such a knitted pouf looks very beautiful, neat, and bright. But imagine the cost of such a product and the consumption of knitted yarn for a pouf, if a skein of 50 grams and only 30 m long costs 350 rubles! Well, perhaps you have a lot of old T-shirts from which you cut yarn, the principles of knitting from it are the same as simple poufs from wool yarn, only you will need to take 8-10 hooks.

In my opinion, this is the case, as with rugs, when you can use cheap yarn, and by choosing beautiful colour and pattern, you can end up making a very good hanger.

Lining

The lining can be sewn from any fabric, old knitted items. Two parts are cut out of it according to the size of the pouf and sewed together along the edge, leaving a large hole. After stuffing with filling material, the hole is sutured.

Filler

How to fill a knitted pouf:

  • cotton wool
  • foam rubber
  • padding polyester
  • holofiber
  • polystyrene balls.

You will need a lot of filler, about a kilogram of cotton wool or 5 liters of balls. They fill the case very tightly, pressing it with your hands and giving it the desired shape.

But in this case, you will still get a relatively soft pouf. If you want a stiffer pouf, you can make it from plastic bottles, For example.

And creative people also make a pouf out of a tire with their own hands! Old car tires are increasingly being used not only in the country for beautiful flower beds.

To create a pouf from a tire, a circle of plywood is cut out along its diameter and attached to the tire using self-tapping screws. Often the top and edges are decorated by wrapping it with twine, or for home interiors, if anyone dares to do this, knit a pouf cover from wool threads or sew it from denim.

Simple Round Crochet Pouf

Photo from the magazine “Wonderful Hook”.

For a pouf with a diameter of 48 cm and a height of 24 cm, you will need 100 grams of thick yarn (80% acrylic, 20% wool) in five different colors for stripes and 300 grams of yarn in the main color (bright red). Recommended hook size is #10.

Description

When crocheting this pouf, single crochets are used. You need to start knitting from the top, casting 5 VP, and then - according to the rules of the circle, adding loops in each row and alternating different colors of threads.

In the first row there are 12 C1H, and by the 11th row there should already be 120 columns.

We knit rows 11-21 without increments with yarn of the main color.

And from the 22nd row we again introduce different colors and knit with decreasing stitches in the reverse order.

At the level of the 25th row, you can insert a bag of polypropylene balls into the case and then continue knitting until there are 6 loops left.

Tighten the remaining hole with a needle and thread.

This is the basic technology for crocheting poufs. Of course, you can use any patterns, for example, make paths from embossed columns or paths from “cones”.

Cylindrical pouf

And although in the photo there are poufs knitted with a smooth pattern, the pattern is exactly with embossed columns. (There was no photo for this pattern from a handicraft magazine unknown to me).

The difference between knitting a cylindrical pouf and a round one is only in its size: the diameter is smaller and the height is larger (40 x 50 cm).

Here it is enough to knit 8 rows of a circle according to the pattern, and then knit all rows without increases as the 8th to the desired height of the pouf.

Insert a rolled up roll of foam rubber into the resulting cylinder and sew a round leather piece at the bottom.

Large striped pouf

Photo from Burda magazine for 2016.

The pouf is crocheted from 100% cotton thread (85 m/50g) with a 4.5 crochet hook and is 60 cm in diameter with a height of 30 cm.

The total yarn consumption is 700 grams: 100 grams for each of the seven colors. I think it will be very convenient to use leftover yarn.

Description

The lower and upper parts of the pouf are two crocheted circle. Knitting in single crochets with changing colors in the rows. Approximately, you need to knit 48 rows, while in rows 18,19, 27, 28, 32, 33, 39, 40, 44, 45, do not increase, this way you will get a hemisphere.

The side side is knitted on 44 loops in rotating rows, also with color changes. The length of this strip can be checked by the circumference of the circular part. At the end of knitting, connect the last row with the first into a ring and tie the upper edge of the ring with double crochets.

Then connect the side part with round crochet, tied with single crochets.

Square pouf

Photo from Diana Creative magazine for 2015.

This pouf is proposed to be knitted from wool melange yarn(100m/50g). Consumption: 450 grams per pouf with a height of 18 cm and a diameter of 50 cm at a knitting density obtained with crochet No. 6.

Description

It is more convenient to start knitting from the middle part, consisting of square motifs. The motifs are easily knitted according to the pattern below in circular rows.

Connect 9 ready-made motifs together into a ring.

The upper and lower parts can be knitted similarly to the previous striped model. But if you start with a square, then it should be tied to the shape of a circle in the 7th row as follows: on the side of the square - 3СБН, 5PS, 5С1Н, 5ПС, 3СБН, in the corner loop - 2СБН, 3С1Н, 2СБН.

Connect the round parts to the ring in a slow step.

Knitted round pouf

You will need about 800 grams of yarn (50m/50g) for a pouf measuring 50x28 cm. Knitting needles - straight No. 8.

The pattern is garter stitch (knit all rows).

Description

You need to knit a pouf with knitting needles in the transverse direction on 24-30 loops in rotating rows.

In the first two rows we knit all the loops.

In the next 2 rows at the end of the row we do not knit 4 loops, tighten the last loop and turn the work.

In the 5th-6th row we do not knit the last 8 loops.

In the 7th row we knit all the loops to the end.

In row 8, we are knitting again on all loops.

This will form a ball. Having knitted 120-130 cm, we close all the loops.

Pull a thread through the edges on one side, pull it together and sew it up.

Sew the first row to the last.

Insert a pillow with filling and tighten the bottom edge of the pouf.

Cover for a square ottoman

A cube-shaped ottoman is generally very easy to knit with knitting needles.

To do this, first knit a strip 50 cm wide and 2 m long and connect its edges.

Then square sides (50x50 cm) are knitted and connected to a long strip.

For the pattern as in the photo, alternate purl and knit stitches, shifting them in each row.

Knitted interior items are very, very in fashion now. If you open any magazine or women's blog with articles about interior design, then in 99% of the interior photographs there will be some kind of knitted item: an ottoman, a blanket or something else. Isn't this a reason to arm yourself with knitting needles or crochet?

I have already talked about it, which, by the way, still serves me today. At the same time, I also knitted an ottoman. I’ll tell you about it now:

IN Lately The following ottomans began to appear frequently in photographs of interiors:

Large and small, bright and not so bright, arranged in a pyramid and individually. I really liked them. The only thing I didn't like was the price:

Therefore, I had to urgently figure out how to knit the ottoman myself. Almost all homemade ottomans found on the Internet are crocheted. It is, of course, easier than knitting, but I don’t really like their look:

Knitted ottoman: knitting needles

For knitting, we needed the thickest knitting needles we could find in the store - 9mm. The knitting needles themselves are good, but the fishing line is too thin, so I had to distribute the knitting so that it does not break.

What to knit an ottoman from:

This question was perhaps the most important. Regular threads didn't work. Cutting knitted clothes into strips is not an option, because I don’t have so many unnecessary plain knitted clothes 🙂 The choice fell on clotheslines. Just not synthetic ones (although one was purchased for testing), but cotton ones. And here the following difficulties arose: firstly, cotton ropes are not solid (it is a kind of “case” of thin threads stuffed with cotton wool) and therefore quite heavy, and secondly, it is quite problematic to buy them, especially in the quantities that I needed . Very soon, the sellers of all the surrounding hardware stores already knew me as the crazy lady who buys all the ropes. “Everything” is a strong word, because as a rule they don’t have more than 2-3 on sale. And it took quite a lot of them to make the ottoman. I’ve already lost count, but at least 20 are for sure, and maybe all 30. The knitting process was constantly interrupted due to the fact that the ropes were running out. As a result, I knitted the ottoman for more than a month, although the knitting itself progressed very quickly.

First I knitted a long rectangle. Then I tied the sides together with rope so that it looked like a wide skirt. Then, in the same way, I pulled the bottom together with a rope and it turned out to be a bag. Next, this bag had to be filled with something. I wanted to see the result as soon as possible, I was too lazy to go to the store, so all the old and unnecessary clothes went into stuffing. I just carefully put all my old jackets, pants and T-shirts in there. This makes the ottoman not as fluffy and round as it would be from holofiber or foam rubber, and it’s also quite heavy. But at least a whole shelf in the closet was freed up :) And finally, I pulled the top of the ottoman off with a rope. The ottoman turned out to be quite heavy and not very soft, you can’t call it a pillow anymore. But it is very comfortable to sit on.

You can make an ottoman for your home with your own hands, even using different materials and techniques: crocheted or knitted, sewn from improvised materials or even from an old sweater.

A bright pouf will look great in a nursery, bedroom and even living room. It’s quite easy to knit such a pouf yourself; you don’t need to add or subtract loops; the pattern is based on a simple one. rectangular shape. As a filler for a knitted pouf, you can use foam rubber or polystyrene foam balls, which are easy to find in hardware stores. Choose the color of the yarn depending on your mood and the design of the room for which the pouf is intended.

round pouf

How to knit a round pouf

The first and easiest method.
You will need the thickest knitting needles you have, ideally size 10, larger if possible, and thick yarn. If the yarn is not very thick, you need to knit in 2 - 3 folds of thread.
Cast on 40 stitches or as many as you need - this will be the approximate height of your pouf. Knit in garter stitch (knit stitches all rows) into a long rectangle. For a small ottoman, the knitting width will be approximately 50 cm and the length will be about 1 meter. Firmly sew the finished knitted piece tightly, closing the rectangle into a ring. In order to give shape to our future pouf, we need to tighten one of the sides of the resulting ring. This will be the top or bottom of the pouf. To do this, pass a thread of the same yarn you used to knit, or any other strong thread, through every second loop of one of the long sides of the rectangle and tighten it tightly until a minimum hole is formed in the center of the bottom. Then take another similar thread and thread it through those loops that were left loose the first time and tighten it just as tightly.
All that remains is to put the filling into the knitted pouf and tighten the second side of the ring in the same way as the first. For the filler, it is better to sew a technical cover from any dense fabric, having previously cut it to size knitted fabric. To be able to add filler during the operation of the pouf, you can sew a small zipper, 10-15 cm long, into the technical cover. Then the pouf will last longer and you can, without much difficulty, refresh the knitted and technical covers. It is important to know that without an inner cover made of thick fabric, the pouf may stretch and lose its shape.

Second way, is also quite simple, its secret is in alternating knitting needles of different diameters.
To make a medium-sized knitted pouf using this method you will need:
circular knitting needles № 2, 3, 4, 5;
- yarn of medium thickness - 500 or 600 g, depending on the size of the pouf;
— loose filler, previously placed in a technical case.
To knit the bottom of the pouf, cast on 40 stitches on circular needles No. 3 and knit in a circle with a 1 x 1 elastic band approximately 3-4 cm in height.
We switch to needles No. 2 and knit 4 -5 cm in garter stitch and 5 cm in English elastic.
Continue knitting with English elastic using knitting needles No. 3, after 5 cm switch to knitting needles No. 4, after another 5 cm knit 2 loops from each loop, you get 80 loops. Knit 80 stitches with a regular 2x2 rib or 2x2 English rib. Having knitted 4-5 cm in this way, switch to knitting needles of the largest diameter, in our case No. 5.
On knitting needles No. 5 we knit the required height of the pouf, 30 or 40 cm at your discretion. The pattern of the main part of the knitting can be a simple or English rib 1x1 or 2x2, but it must be an elastic band. When the required height is knitted, switch to needles No. 4, after 5 cm to needles No. 3 and stockinette stitch. Knitting 2-3 cm stockinette stitch We gradually begin to reduce the number of loops. To do this, divide 80 loops by 4, and distribute the loops as follows:
*Knit 19 – Purl 1*
On both sides of the purl loop we knit two loops together in each even row, thus reducing 8 loops in each even row. Knit, cutting stitches until only four purl stitches remain on the knitting needles. They can be closed, or you can knit a decorative “tail” of any length so that it peeks out intricately from under the pouf.

Method three: Just recently I found another one interesting idea knitting a pouf with knitting needles. As a result, I got something like this rainbow poufs.

rainbow poufs knitted

The main knitting, as in the first version of the knitted pouf, is shawl. The difference from the 1st option is that you need to knit not a rectangle, but a parallelogram.

To knit a parallelogram, you need to: in every second row - at the beginning of the row, add one loop, and at the end of the same row, subtract one loop by knitting the last 2 loops together. In this way we knit the fabric of the required length, it all depends on how high we want the pouf to be. For a “rainbow” effect, change the color of the yarn after 2 or 4 rows. Or you can do it every 6 rows - it depends on your imagination.

As in the first option, we sew the fabric, closing it into a ring with two narrow sides facing each other. Afterwards, we tighten the bottom of the pouf and sew it together. We fill the pouf with filling, not forgetting about the technical cover, and sew the top part of the pouf.
