For experienced needlewomen, it may seem too drawn out. But it is precisely this master class and patterns that will help beginning craftswomen who want to try their hand at sewing Tilda dolls with their own hands.

Tilda doll: master class for beginners. Patterns

In order to start making a toy in the Tilda style, you must first decide which one you want to sew, and understand exactly what you will need. If you have never made a Tilda doll before, the master class and patterns will definitely help you in this matter.

It is better to start from the simplest and move on to more complex ones; you should not immediately take on complex products. If you are about to start sewing Tilda for the first time, detailed master class and patterns with sizes are exactly what you need. They make it possible to correctly calculate the details and avoid mistakes.

When mastering the skill of making a doll with your own hands, choose a master class and patterns that are not particularly complex, with a minimum number of parts. Patterns for beginners are ideal.

Master class on materials selection

When choosing fabrics, it is worth considering the fact that Tildas are sewn exclusively from natural materials. You can take, for example, cotton, wool, linen. The body of the doll is usually made of material, flesh-colored, beige or white flowers. It is also possible to dye the fabric with cinnamon or tea. If you want to use fabric with a pattern, make sure that the print is small and matches the size of the doll.

Master class on the Tilda sewing process

The whole sewing process begins with the fact that we prepare the fabric. It needs to be ironed, folded in half, with the front side facing inward. Then the pattern is placed on the material, pinned with pins, and outlined with chalk or a special marker. All parts are stitched, leaving a small hole for stuffing, and cut out.

If the products have bends, small notches must be made in these places. Such toys are usually stuffed with holofiber or synthetic fluff. The head and body are stuffed evenly and tightly, but the arms and legs - not so much. Also, so that the legs and arms are mobile and can bend freely, they do this: they are filled halfway, stitched lengthwise, and then stuffed to the end. All unstitched areas are sewn up using a hidden seam.

Hair for Tilda

To create hair for a doll, you can take various materials: threads, wool, ribbons and others. Nowadays, needlewomen often use boucle yarn. There are also several ways to secure hair: you can sew it, glue it, felt it with a special needle, or draw it.

Master class on tailoring

There are two ways to sew clothes for Tilda: one-piece and separate. In the first version, the pattern itself contains parts of clothing. This method is best suited for interior dolls. This is because with further use it will be impossible to change the outfit of such a doll.

If you are planning to sew a Tilda for your baby, then it is best to make clothes that can be taken off and put on. Because the child will probably want to change his beauty’s dresses.

Features of Tilda's appearance

All dolls made in the Tilda style have special features: they all have small black eyes that can be embroidered using a French knot, or simply painted with acrylic paints. A light blush is applied to the cheeks using regular blush.

Cute Tilda dolls easily win the hearts of both adults and children. By making such a beauty with your own hands, you can give a lot of positivity not only to yourself, but also to those people to whom you can give these charming toys, whom you will endow with warmth and positive emotions! Get creative and have fun!

I first met Tilda a couple of years ago on some craft forum. This naive, rosy-cheeked and so cozy doll fell in love with me at first sight. In general, I like everything that is unusual, vintage and beautiful. Once in my youth I sewed toys, so I was eager to try to make Tilda, because there is nothing complicated about it. The main thing is the details and consistency of a unique style, characteristic only of her.

My first pattern was intended for beginners, but I still use it today, having slightly changed and improved the proportions. It is easier to sew large parts than small ones, although it takes longer, especially by hand. Therefore, first you should practice on dolls tall. I’ll tell you now how to sew such a Doll in the style of Tilda.

Materials for sewing Tilda for beginners

We will need several scraps of fabric different color, but definitely from natural fibers. I didn’t buy anything, everything was in stock at home old clothes. For the body and clothes I used cotton - white and with small flowers. A sleeve from an old one came up as hair wool sweater, which I let down to get wonderful curls. Lace was also useful for decorating Tilda’s blouse and shoes. And also two small buttons, braid for the same shoes, two decorative flowers in the hair, thin white ribbon to put into pantaloons. These decorative little things can also be found at home, for example, cutting off buttons from old things, undoing lace from a blouse that has been boring for a long time. For the work you will need white, black and red threads (my Tilda has a mouth), blush, padding polyester, scissors, paper, pen, pins and a needle.

The working process

1.On paper, wallpaper or newspaper you need to draw a pattern for the future Tilda. The optimal size for the first experiment from the top of the head to the edges of the legs is 50-60 cm. Cut out the finished drawing.

2. Next, take the fabric from which the doll’s body will be sewn. If there is no material of a suitable color (dark beige, flesh-colored, light brown), you can make it that way. Ordinary white cotton perfectly turns into a pleasant dark color if it is soaked for several hours in coffee or a thick infusion of tea. I used coffee: good effect and aroma.

3. All fabrics that you will work with must be ironed so that there are no folds or wrinkles. Place the pattern on a flat rag cloth and trace it with a pen. Each part requires two copies - the back and the front.

4. It is necessary to cut the pattern not along the very outline of the pattern, but with an indentation of at least 0.5 cm. This margin is necessary so that after stitching the edges do not fray.

5. When everything is already cut out, it’s time to sew the parts together. It is easier and more convenient to do this using a regular interfacing seam, making small even stitches and following the lines drawn on the fabric. Leave the lower body, arms and legs at the bases unsewn, so that you can then fill them through the holes with filler.

6. The finished parts must first be turned out. To do this neatly, because the neck and limbs are quite thin parts, use a pencil or pen, just push the blunt edge inside. Carefully and with moderate density stuff all parts of the toy’s body with padding polyester; after filling the hole, secure it with pins so that the filler does not come out back and it is more convenient to connect everything together.

7. Sew on the arms and legs in a straight line, tucking the edges slightly onto the body so that the threads don’t get caught and it looks aesthetically pleasing.

8. In the area of the doll’s elbows and knees, it is necessary to make tensions so that they can bend (make several even stitches, pulling the thread well and pressing the padding polyester inside).

9. The body is ready, now all that remains is to dress it and give a human appearance to the face. You can sew clothes for Tilda, guided by your own taste. The standard option is a colorful sundress, white blouse and long johns.

10. The pattern for the long johns can be made according to the same template that was sewn for the doll, measuring the required length - approximately from the line just above the waist to the knee, adding in width so that they come out fluffy and not tight. The pants are sewn from two identical parts, the top edge is folded and hemmed, leaving a cavity inside, and the bottom edges are decorated with lace. Thread a ribbon through the hole in the hemmed top to secure the long johns on Tilda’s figure.

11. A blouse can also be made from two identical halves, which are sewn together. I made it a little more complicated - I separately cut a sleeveless vest with a longitudinal slit on the back for ease of dressing and sleeves for it. Then I sewed, gathering small folds on the sleeves in the shoulder area to make them fuller. The cuffs and collar, like the long johns, were decorated with lace.

12. The sundress consists of upper and lower parts. The top is a short top with the same vertical slit at the back, the edges of which slightly overlap each other, like the blouse.

Bottom – fluffy skirt length slightly above the knees, for which it is necessary to take fabric two to three times the width of the top to make ruffles during stitching with a connecting buttonhole stitch. When the top and skirt are already together, connect the hem, do not forget to hem the bottom edge.

13. The sundress should have buttons on the back for fastening. Sew them on, make and process holes for fastening. The area around the neck can either be hemmed or decorated with a thin light ribbon.

14. Shoes for Tilda are sewn according to the foot, and more precisely the pattern legs Circle only the edges and draw an oval. Leave one in this form, and remove a piece from the other in the form v-neck. This will be the top of the shoe. Transfer the oval parts to white fabric, and curly ones to the one from which the sundress was sewn. Cut with an indent and sew along the contour of the sole and toe. When turned inside out, decorate with a small piece of lace and a button in the middle, and attach a braid at the back long enough for ties.

15. The doll is already dressed, with shoes, but faceless and hairless. Cut a piece from an old knitted wool sweater and start making hair. By unraveling it, you will get a wavy thread. I decided that pale pink color Tilda's hair would suit me, so I chose just that.

When you have pulled enough threads for good hair, cut them into strands of equal length and sew them to Tilda’s head in the middle, separating them with a parting seam.

16. Using black thread, embroider two noticeable dots on Tilda’s face - these are her eyes. Usually these dolls do not have a mouth, but I decided that my girl would be cuter with one, so I made her a cute smile with red thread. Using any blush available in your cosmetic bag, we give the doll rosy cheeks.

17. The final stage is the hairstyle. Take a couple of miniature decorative bows, ribbons or flowers, divide the curls into two parts and tie two tails.

This is the slightly modern Tilda I got, sitting on the stand next to the TV and decorating our living room.

If you follow my master class, follow the basic principles of work, but do not forget to use your imagination, you will probably have her sister at home very soon, just as sweet and positive, and most importantly, made with your own hands and with soul.

As the unsurpassed Coco Chanel aptly said, things made with your own hands are luxury. Therefore, handmade soft toys allow even beginners to increase their positivity when decorating the interior, preparing unique gifts for children, souvenirs for family and friends.

For such crafts you will need patterns and diagrams that correspond to the design, available tools and following a simple technology for their manufacture.

For sewing needlework you need to prepare:

  • pieces of fabric, ribbons, lace;
  • thick paper/cardboard for creating patterns, and for the purpose of transferring them to fabric, also carbon paper and pen/pencil;

  • ruler, scissors, awl, pliers, needles, thimbles;

What to stuff soft toys with

Previously, cotton wool and small pieces of fabric were used to fill soft toys. However, today these materials are being replaced by lighter and more hygienic synthetic materials (sintepon, holofiber, synthetic padding, foam rubber, etc.).

They do not come true, allowing the products to retain their original shape even after prolonged use and repeated washing. It is quite acceptable to use old sweaters made from light yarn in the form of finely chopped strips.

It is also allowed to stuff toys with unpainted, peeled and combed sheep wool(sliver). At the same time, you need to be sure that future owners of such crafts will not have an allergic reaction. The vulnerability of this material lies in its susceptibility to damage by moths and deformation when moistened.

If it is necessary to make some toys heavier (balls, rattles, etc.), soft fillings can be combined with pre-calcined cereals, seeds, husks, and pebbles.

Personally made pillows in the shape of different animals and birds can be stuffed medicinal herbs(mint, sage, lavender, fennel, lemon balm, jasmine, etc.). In this case, the individual tolerance of the components contained in them should be taken into account.

Step-by-step instructions: how to sew a fabric doll

When making a soft toy with your own hands, patterns and diagrams for beginners are the first step towards realizing your plan.

Next steps are as follows:

  1. Selecting the necessary fabrics, washing them, ironing them.
  2. Transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out all the parts with allowance for seams and hems (0.5 cm each).
  3. Basting the resulting parts of the future toy along pre-designated lines (starting with the head, and then the torso, limbs).
  4. Sewing all the parts according to these marks (manually or using sewing machine).
  5. Filling all elements with environmentally friendly materials.
  6. Final attachment of each part to each other.
  7. Decoration of the face, clothes.

How to make a doll's face and hair

For the outer shell of the head, it is necessary to make a bag of the required size from cotton fabric. After filling it with the selected material to mark the neck, you should wrap the lower part 2-3 times with thick threads. Then wrap the head with a piece of flesh-colored knitwear.

To do this, fold it with the front side inward and place the manufactured head on it, mark the lines of the back of the head and neck, then cut out the workpiece and then turn it right side up.

When forming eyes, nose, mouth on the doll’s face, you can use special plastic blanks, buttons, beads, etc.

The second option is sewing/gluing self-made parts from colored fabric or embroidery. Along with this, you can draw the contours of the elements and then color them. The choice of any of the methods depends on what kind of soft toy you should make with your own hands.

Patterns and diagrams for beginners can also tell you which material is best to use for hair, namely:

  • wool yarn, which should be sewn to the head, and then create the desired hairstyle;
  • special tresses (bonded hair on fabric strips);
  • felting yarn;
  • felt for making ponytails/bangs, which, after transferring the patterns onto it, are sewn to the head.

In addition, hair is often imitated by painting it with safe paint of a suitable tone.

Therefore, it is more advisable for beginners to start with small products made from artificial material. The first step is also to prepare the pattern and cut it to allow for future seams.

It is important to remember this nuance - you need to work with fur not with scissors, but with a sharp stationery knife or a special knife for tailors.

Soft sock toys

The basis for one of the easiest toys to make is 1 sock of an attractive color without scuffs or holes, which has lost its pair. If you want to make a “chubby” toy, you need to shorten it by cutting off the part that covers the foot, and also move the elastic band on top of it. The unworn parts of children's tights that have become small and tight will also come in handy here.

Before starting work, beginners can use a felt-tip pen to mark the location of body parts (head, neck, paws, torso) from the inside out. This will help minimize proportion errors. The technique allows for combining several colors from other socks to designate a “mask” on the animal’s face, tummy, paws, etc.

There are many options for creating “sock” toys with the initial production of patterns and measurements for the location of body parts. Many people make cute toys “quickly” by first filling the products and forming ears from the tied ends of the tops of socks, and then drawing the outlines of faces, waists, and various accessories on this figure.

  3. Measure a smaller piece for the head and tie it tightly to prevent the filler from spilling out.
  4. Divide the remaining edge of the sock into 2 parts, and then cut out the ears from them, giving them a standing/sagging position and sew them along the cut lines with small thick stitches.
  5. Attach a pompom ponytail to the bottom of the back.
  6. Decorating the toy: gluing oval/semi-oval circles of a different color to the tummy; attaching eye-beads made from denser fabric of the clove and nose.
  7. Hare decoration (bow on the head between the ears for girls, and on the neck for boys).

The doll's body is usually sewn from dyed fabric natural dyes. It could be tea, coffee or cinnamon. Such material should certainly be dried in an unfolded state so that unnecessary streaks do not form. For clothes, use fabrics with small prints so that the patterns match the doll's size.

In addition, ribbons and lace are used in large quantities, as well as various sewing elements. Today there is a whole Tilda industry. Craftsmen and designers create everything for sewing these dolls, from fabrics to various decorative sewn-on elements. Entire kits are also assembled to create one or another toy. They include everything that may be needed during the work process. If you have chosen a simple Tilda doll (pattern), a master class on sewing it will come in handy. However, the beauty of the product lies in its simplicity.

The process of sewing a doll

The required size piece of fabric should be ironed well and folded in half with the right side inward. To sew a Tilda doll, the patterns need to be transferred to fabric. To do this, they are cut out of paper, pinned to the material with pins and outlined with a pencil or chalk. After all the details of the pattern are transferred to the fabric, they are stitched along the contour, leaving room for stuffing, and only then cut out. Zigzag scissors are often used for this. If you don’t have such a tool, you should cut allowances in corners and bends. This is done so that when turning inside out, unnecessary folds do not form.

These dolls are most often stuffed with holofiber or synthetic fluff. Moreover, the head and torso are densely stuffed, but the arms and legs become softer and more flexible. To achieve airiness, the legs, like the handles, are stitched at the knees and elbows. Then it will be easy to give the limbs any position. You can also easily place your doll in any place. All holes that were left for stuffing are sewn up using a hidden seam.

Hairstyle for a doll

A variety of materials are used to create hairstyles for Tilda dolls. It can be wool, threads, yarn, satin ribbons or just natural and artificial doll curls. Bouclé yarn is very popular among craftsmen. Hair can be sewn on, glued, attached with a felting needle, and even simply drawn on using brushes and acrylic paints.

Clothes for Tilda doll. Patterns

Any doll must be dressed. Craftswomen dress their Tilda in two ways. One of them involves a one-piece suit. In this case, the doll pattern already includes elements of clothing.

Of course, this option is best suited for themed and exclusively interior dolls. This is due to the fact that such outfits are not subsequently removed, and it is not possible to change the doll’s clothes. If you are going to give such a toy to a child, then you can create additional clothes for the Tilda doll, the patterns for which are developed separately.

Such a doll can be dressed and her outfits changed, which will be more interesting during the game than when the clothes are sewn on.

Additional accessories

In addition to clothes, needlewomen often “gift” their dolls with additional accessories. These can be various handbags, hats, suitcases and other small items. For dolls in nautical style often sew small-sized fabric shells or sea stars, and to make them more realistic, you can paint on some elements using fabric paints. Accessories are created different ways. Masters resort to a huge variety creative processes. Modeling, papier-mâché, wire weaving, and much, much more are used. Everything that is created also has its own patterns. For Tilda dolls, stands are made that allow the product to be secured.

Features of Tilda's face

All Tilda dolls are united by a special face. These are two dots for the eyes and blush on the cheeks. The eyes are usually embroidered with floss using the French knot technique, but they can also be painted with acrylic paints or sewn with beads in their place. When embroidering eyes, you can leave small tips when cutting the threads. They will imitate eyelashes. The doll's cheeks are created using a brush or sponge, which is used to apply regular loose blush. If you don’t have them on hand, you can draw cheekbones using acrylic paint or use a crushed red pencil lead. If you are sewing animals in the Tilda style, such as a hare or a cat, then using floss threads you can also embroider a nose and muzzle. Cheeks made with blush are required not only for dolls, but also for animals.
