Day of the Railway Forces.

It was first established by presidential decree of July 19, 1996. It is currently celebrated as a memorial day of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation of May 31, 2006 "On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation."

On August 6 (August 18 in a new style), in 1851, Emperor Nicholas I approved the Regulation on the composition of the management of the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway, according to which the first special military formations were created in the engineering troops to protect and operate the railway.

The railway troops played an important role in the First World War, during which they built more than 4 thousand kilometers of railways, restored more than 4.6 thousand kilometers of tracks.

At present, the Railway Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are special formations intended for the restoration, construction, operation and technical cover of the railways used for military transport. The number of the Railway Troops of the Armed Forces of Russia is over 23 thousand military personnel, of which about 5 thousand are serving under the contract.

Hiroshima Day - World Nuclear Weapons Day.

An unofficial commemorative date dedicated to the day of the US atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945 and to the day of the first international conference on the prohibition of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima.

The United States began preparations for the combat use of the atomic bomb in the summer of 1944. It was originally planned to drop 9 atomic bombs on rice fields in Japan or at sea, but subsequently it was decided to use new weapons against densely populated cities.

July 25, 1945, US President Harry Truman approved the order to bomb one of the Japanese cities: Hiroshima, Kokuru, Niigata or Nagasaki.

On August 6, at 8.15 a.m., the Little Boy atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima with a uranium charge, the TNT equivalent of which was about 20 thousand tons. The city was wiped off the face of the earth. Died

about 80 thousand people, over 12 thousand - were missing, 40 thousand people were injured.

On August 9, at 11 hours a.m. an American plane dropped the second Fat Man atomic bomb (“Fat Man”) on Nagasaki with a plutonium charge, the TNT equivalent of which was equal to “Baby”. More than 73 thousand people were killed and missing, later another 35 thousand people died from radiation and injuries.

The total number of victims of the two tragedies is over 450 thousand people, and survivors still suffer from diseases caused by radiation exposure. According to the latest data, their number is 183 thousand 519 people.

103 years ago (1915) during the First World War, an event known as the “Attack of the Dead” occurred

This is one of the most famous episodes of the First World War. As a result of a counterattack by the 13th company of the 226th Zemlyansky regiment, which was defending the Osovets fortress, fifty Russian soldiers put almost seven thousand German troops to flight.

A small Russian fortress 23.5 kilometers from the border of East Prussia was of crucial strategic importance. She protected the Germans from crossing the Bobru River and the transport hub Bialystok, the capture of which opened the way to Vilna, Brest, Grodno and Minsk. Despite the small size of the fortress, it was almost impossible to get around it because of the swamps surrounding Osovets.

Since September 1914, the Germans tried twice to take the fortress, using all their latest achievements against its defenders, but Osovets did not give up.

Then, to destroy the garrison of the fortress, the Germans decided to use poisonous gases. They carefully prepared the gas attack, pulling here 30 gas batteries with several thousand cylinders.

On August 6, at 4 o’clock in the morning, after waiting for a fair wind, the Germans began to release the poisonous mixture into Russian positions. The gas wave was 12-15 meters high and 8 kilometers wide.

As a result of the gas attack, more than 1000 defenders of the fortress were killed, almost the entire garrison, including the command, received poisoning of various degrees. No more than fifty soldiers survived.

14 battalions of German troops (about 7 thousand people), after a gas attack and the subsequent massive shelling, launched an attack on the fortress. As one of the members of the Osovets defense recalled: “We did not have gas masks, so the gases caused terrible injuries and chemical burns. When breathing, wheezing and bloody foam escaped from the lungs. Skin on hands and faces bubbled. The rags with which we wrapped our faces did not help. However, the Russian artillery began to operate, sending shells from the green chlorine cloud behind the shell towards the Prussians. Then the head of the 2nd defense department of Osovets Svechnikov, shaking from a terrible cough, wheezed: “My friends, do not die to us, like Prussians cockroaches, from injury. Show them to remember forever! ”

Those who survived the gas attack, including the 13th company, came out to meet the German troops. It was led by Lieutenant Vladimir Kotlinsky.

According to witnesses of that battle, Russian soldiers alone in their appearance (many of them were mutilated after a gas attack and shelling) plunged the German soldiers into shock and total panic. The German attack was repelled. The feat of Russian soldiers went down in history as an act of unprecedented courage.

288 years ago (1730), the Russian Empress Anna Ioannovna signed a decree on the casting of the Assumption of the Great Bell, which later became known as the Tsar Bell.

In the XVII century, on the orders of Boris Godunov, the foundry worker Andrei Chokhov made the first Kremlin bell of a huge size, called the Great Assumption Bell. Unfortunately, he did not last long. During a fire in the Kremlin, he fell and crashed. In the mid-1600s, a new, even larger bell was cast from the fragments of the Great Assumption Bell. And he also did not last long, as he cracked from a strong blow of the tongue at him. Instead of a broken bell, another one was cast, but in June 1701, during a fire in the Kremlin, it fell and crashed.

The execution of the decree of Empress Anna Ioannovna was entrusted to the Office of the main artillery and fortification. The casting of the bell was entrusted to Ivan Motorin, who produced the largest bells for Russian monasteries.

The Tsar Bell was molded and cast in a special pit dug in Ivanovskaya Square. The first attempt to cast the bell in 1734 ended in failure. During the work, a fire occurred, as a result of which the bell shape was damaged.

The new Tsar Bell was cast on November 25, 1735. Work continued for more than 36 hours. 12 thousand 327 poods (201 tons 924 kilograms) of bell bronze were poured into the mold.

After finishing the work, Tsar Bell, for unknown reasons, he remained in a foundry pit for a long time. There he was caught by the famous Trinity fire that arose in the Kremlin in May 1737. When the fire was extinguished, water fell on the hot metal of the bell, and a piece weighing 11.5 tons broke off from it.

For more than a hundred years, attempts have been made to extract the bell from the pit, which ended in failure. In 1836, the St. Petersburg architect Auguste Montferrand developed a project for a lifting device and a special stone pedestal for installing the Tsar Bell on it. The bell was removed from the pit and, as an example of foundry art, was mounted on an octagonal pedestal made of sandstone, where it still stands today.

27 years ago (1991) the first Internet server appeared.

The history of the World Wide Web began in 1989, when the British scientist Tim Berners-Lee published his ideas about creating a global computer network. A year later, he gained access to the NeXT computer, which became the first Internet server, browser, and network editor. In 1991, the Berners-Lee project was finalized, and a standard for WWW pages was approved.

Today, over 3 billion people use the Internet. The first place in terms of the number of users is taken by the PRC, the second is India and the third is the USA. Russia is in sixth place.

In the years 1934-1942. the main award of the cinema was the “Mussolini Cup”, in 1947-1948. - "The Grand International Prize of Venice." Since 1949, the main prize of the festival has been called the Golden Lion. For 10 years, from 1969 to 1979, the organizers of the Venice Festival returned to the original idea of out-of-competition display of paintings and the Golden Lion was not awarded. On August 6, 1809, Alfred Tennyson was born, an English poet who most clearly expressed the views and hopes of the Victorian era and lived a long and bright life.

By the way, the famous motto of Sani Grigoriev - “Fight and seek, find and not give up” - from the Kaverinsky “Two Captains” goes back to Tennyson’s poem “Travel of Ulysses”:

May we no longer be the forces of those
That the earth and heaven moved the firmament;
Such as we are: sometimes
Hero’s heart from adversity and years
It will weaken - all the same with a strong desire to live,
Search, and find, and not give up.

On August 6, 1856, Apollinarius Vasnetsov, a Russian painter, the younger brother of Viktor Vasnetsov, was born. He studied under Repin, Polenov and, of course, from his brother.

Apollinaris Vasnetsov - the initiator of the historical landscape. This new form was invented by him. Moscow of the 17th century comes to life on its landscapes “Street in Kitay-Gorod”, “Red Square” ... The Tretyakov Gallery presents the artist’s epic paintings: “Homeland”, “Taiga in the Urals”, “Blue Mountain”, “Kama” ...

Art historians and historians say that Vasnetsov seemed to see ancient Moscow through the earth. He knew what could be found during excavations in one place or another in the city. Already at a very advanced age, the creator of the picturesque annals of Moscow, along with metro builders, descended into tunnels and mines. Apollinar Mikhailovich was looking in the dungeons of the capital for traces of a past life, which has become for many a story and a fairy tale. The artist’s son Vsevolod recalled: “Fearing that during the work associated with the construction of the metro, many historical monuments would be lost forever, my father wrote a letter to the newspaper Moskovskaya Pravda. In it, he drew the attention of builders to the great scientific value of such finds and encouraged them to cooperate with specialists - historians or archaeologists ... He wanted to see everything with his own eyes, to touch the remnants of a bygone era. Without regard to anything, he made his way into the very depths of the tunnel. And having returned from such an expedition, he immediately (while still fresh in memory) wrote down and sketched in detail everything that he saw interesting. ”

On August 6, 1881, the bacteriologist Alexander Fleming was born in the Scottish town of Lochfield. From the first steps in science, he was obsessed with the idea that all living things had protective mechanisms, otherwise no organism could exist: bacteria would invade it freely and kill it. Fleming devoted his life to the search for these mechanisms.

Like many scientists, luck and chance helped him. In Fleming's laboratory, mold was his main enemy. It never occurred to anyone to use this “dirt” in the fight against disease. Once in one of the cups, Fleming found mold around which the bacteria did not multiply. Separating the mold, he found that "the broth on which the mold had grown ... acquired a distinctly expressed ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms." So in 1928 penicillin was discovered.

Penicillin marked the beginning of a new era in medicine - the treatment of diseases with antibiotics. In the entire history of mankind, there was no medicine in the world that would save so many lives. Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery.

In Greece, where the scientist visited, on the day of his death, national mourning was declared, and in Barcelona, all the city’s florists poured armfuls of flowers from their baskets to the plaque with the name of the great bacteriologist and “physician of the century” Alexander Fleming.

On August 6, 1915, Valentin Levashev was born - a composer, choral conductor, and collector of folklore. He headed the Siberian Folk Choir, for many years was the artistic director of the Pyatnitsky Russian Folk Choir.

His songs were performed by Claudia Shulzhenko, Maya Kristalinskaya, Anna German, Lyudmila Zykina ... On the verses of Bulat Okudzhava Levashev wrote one of the best songs about the war - "Take your greatcoat, go home."

Concerned about the departure from the country of creative intelligentsia, Benito Mussolini, an ardent movie fan, put a lot of effort into organizing a film forum that could compete with the Oscars. On the day of our review - August 6, 1932 - he opened the first Venice Film Festival. The organizers, under the personal control of the Duce, attracted 9 countries to participate in it, which submitted 29 full-length and 14 short films to the competition. The first film to be screened was “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Ruben Mamulyan.

The next festival in 1934 was attended by 17 countries and 40 feature films. Then the main prize - the Mussolini Cup - was awarded to the Soviet Union for the best program presented (it included Cheerful Guys, Thunderstorm, Petersburg Night, Ivan, Pyshka, New Gulliver and Outskirts ").

However, with the strengthening of fascist Germany, Italy's closest ally, the festival in Venice began to gradually turn into the obsessive propaganda of the “new order”. Soon the Second World War began, and in 1939-1945 the festival was not held.

After the war, he resumed. And if the Berlin Film Festival is today considered the most political, Cannes - the most international, then the Venice - the most elitist. It is held on the island-resort of Lido, and the emblem of Venice - the golden winged lion - since 1980 has become the main prize of the film festival.

On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb code-named "Kid" was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima from an American B-29 aircraft.

There was no military need for this intimidation action. US President Harry Truman stated that the bomb was dropped at a military base. He lied. The bomb fell on the heads of civilians, women, the elderly and children. As a result of the explosion that occurred at an altitude of 600 meters, most of the city was destroyed, more than 140 thousand of its inhabitants were killed. The number of victims of nuclear bombing is growing today, as the consequences of the explosion affect several generations. In memory of this tragedy, August 6 is celebrated as World Day for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. On this day, Hiroshima residents light candles and let them float down the river. Hiroshima's bell sounds every year.

IN RUSSIA

Russian Railway Day. The Day of the Railway Troops, celebrated in Russia annually on August 6, was established by decree of the President of the Russian Federation of July 19, 1996.

In 1851 military units were created to guard and operate the railway. On August 6, 1851, the Commander-in-Chief of Railways and Public Buildings of the Russian State issued an order on the creation of workers, designers and telegraph companies for the protection and operation of the St. Petersburg - Moscow Railway.

In 1961 Soviet cosmonaut German Titov made the second space flight in history. On August 6, 1961, at nine in the morning Moscow time, the Soviet cosmonaut German Titov, on the Vostok-2 spacecraft, went into low Earth orbit and spent 25 hours 11 minutes flying around the Earth 17 times.

Name day. Anatoly, Athanasius, Boris, Gleb, David, Ivan, Hilarion, Christina, Nikolai, Roman.

Born on this day. (1763) Yakov Kulnev, Russian commander, major general, hero of the Patriotic War of 1812. (1798) Pavel Demidov, Russian entrepreneur, philanthropist and philanthropist. (1881) Alexander Fleming, British bacteriologist, Nobel Laureate. (1904) Tikhon Rabotnov, Soviet and Russian ecologist and geobotanist, professor emeritus of Moscow State University.

According to the folk calendar. Boris and Gleb. On this day, the peasants tried not to go to the fields and meadows, otherwise there could be a fire. At the heart of such a belief are numerous thunderstorms, the time of which began in August, and which were accompanied by lightning that could set fire to haystacks. Because of this, the day Boris and Gleb was also called Palikopna - from the words "to shoot the heaps." “Don’t take bread for Gleb and Boris,” our ancestors said, implying that the harvest should be postponed, although it was “bread that was ripening for Boris and Gleb.”

According to the lunar calendar. Moon phase: fourth quarter, waning crescent. Today is a very powerful day. On these lunar days, the forces of nature are awakening, conducive to creation. And in man, strength awakens. This day is good to lay the foundation for new big things. In ancient Egypt, it was on this day that the pyramids were laid. It is good to start global long-term projects. But there is no need to abuse the awakened forces - they can turn into evil.

The 24th lunar day is connected with Russia by invisible information threads. Previously, it was a day of prayer for Russia, for the national egregor. On this day, people are complacent. They may not differ in tenderness and politeness of statements, but they have no purpose to be rude and offend.

Railway Day, celebrated in Russia annually on August 6, is established by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of July 19, 1996 “On the establishment of the Day of the Railway Troops of the Russian Federation”, and is currently celebrated in accordance with the decree “On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation "Dated May 31, 2006.

This professional holiday of servicemen, workers and civil servants of the Railway Troops of the Russian Federation (VDV Armed Forces of Russia) is timed to the day of the formation of special military units for the protection and operation of the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway.

On August 6, 1851, the “highest approval” by Emperor Nicholas I of the “Regulations on the composition of the management of the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway” was issued.

According to the "Regulation", it was formed 14 separate military workers, two conductors and a telegraph company with a total number of 4,340 people.

This marked the beginning of the formation of the first military railway units. They were ordered to maintain the railway track in good condition, ensure the uninterrupted operation of the stations, and protect bridges and railway crossings.

Starting from the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, the railway soldiers contributed to the victories of Russian weapons. During the Great Patriotic War, the Railway troops, together with civilian railway workers, restored and built more than 120 thousand kilometers of railways, over 3 thousand bridges. And after its completion, they actively participated not only in the restoration and reconstruction of the destroyed railways, but also in the construction of new ones.

For more than one hundred and fifty years, military railway workers have selflessly and selflessly served and are serving the Fatherland.

Railway troops are a branch of the special forces as part of the Logistics of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (from 2005 to 2010 they were part of the Rear Services of the RF Armed Forces), which is part of the state defense and national security system.

These are special troops intended for reconstruction, construction, operation, barriers and technical cover of the railways used for military traffic. And they also take part in the elimination of the consequences of emergencies, accidents, disasters and military operations and conflicts.

Celebrated on the anniversary of the bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima (Photo: Brad Cavanagh, Shutterstock)

“Doctors of the world for peace” - This is an international day proposed by the Doctors of the World for the Prevention of a Nuclear Threat organization. It is celebrated on the anniversary of a terrible tragedy - the day of the bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

In a sense, this day is symbolic and serves as a reminder of this human tragedy, of the role of doctors in the struggle for peace and in the prevention of war in general. The organization celebrates this day with its daily work. After all, it is doctors who save human lives.

For more than 70 years, every year on August 6 at 8.15 a.m., the Japanese city of Hiroshima freezes - a moment of silence. With their arms folded and their heads bowed, elderly and young Japanese, mothers and children, teachers and officials - all these minutes are thinking about that terrible day on August 6, 1945, when an atomic bomb was dropped on a peaceful city. Also on this day, commemorative events take place in Hiroshima Peace Park, where an eternal flame burns in front of the monument to the victims of the bombing with the inscription "Sleep well - you will not make a mistake again."

As a result of this bombing, about 200 thousand people were killed and missing, more than 160 thousand people were injured and exposed to radiation, and so far the victims of this event continue to die from radiation sickness.

And three days later, an atomic bomb with a plutonium charge of the same power was dropped on another Japanese city - Nagasaki ...

10 years after these tragic events, the first international conference on the prohibition of atomic and hydrogen weapons was held in Hiroshima, and in 1985 the South Pacific was declared a nuclear-free zone (Rarotong Treaty).

The Doctors of the World for the Prevention of Nuclear Threat organization appeared in 1980 in France as a result of separation from another famous international organization, Doctors Without Borders. Since then, large branches of Doctors of the World have appeared in dozens of countries around the world, and today this movement unites more than 200 thousand doctors in its ranks, and the number of its supporters continues to grow. Every year on August 6, they organize various charity and educational events.

Jamaica became independent in 1962 (Photo: Jiri Flogel, Shutterstock)

Every year on August 6, Jamaica celebrates a national holiday - independence Day (Independence Day), established in honor of the anniversary of the declaration of Jamaica's independence from Britain in 1962. This day is marked in the country by festivities, festivities and fireworks.

In ancient times, Jamaica was inhabited by Indians. The new history of Jamaica began on May 5, 1498, when Christopher Columbus, on his second trip, set foot on its shore. Then in Jamaica (the natives called it "Hamaika") lived more than one hundred thousand Arawak Indians.

Columbus renamed Jamaica to Santiago, and the Spanish crown granted him the title of Marquis of Jamaica, which was then inherited in his family. The natives gradually died out of the overwork brought by the Spaniards of diseases and longing for their former free life, preferring to drink poisonous juice casava. And therefore, already in 1517, the first slaves from Africa were brought here - it was necessary to grow sugarcane.

By 1558, the Indians were completely exterminated, and Jamaica gained terrible fame as the main transit point of the world slave trade. In 1670, the Spaniards were expelled from the island by an English squadron, and Jamaica almost officially became a pirate island.

In 1958, Jamaica became part of the UK-created West Indies (Caribbean) Federation, which included British island possessions in the Caribbean. But already in 1961, the inhabitants of Jamaica voted in a referendum for secession from the Federation, which in May 1962 ceased to exist. Jamaica's independence was proclaimed on August 6, 1962.

Then the national flag of Jamaica was approved. “There are difficulties, but the earth is green and the sun is shining” - this motto corresponds to the symbolism of the colors of the flag. Black stands for overcome difficulties, yellow stands for natural wealth and the beauty of sunlight, green stands for Jamaica's hope and natural resources.

The national emblem depicts a man and a woman of the tribe arawakstanding on both sides of the shield on which is a red cross with five pineapples. Upstairs is a Jamaican crocodile crowning the Royal Helmet and mantle. The motto “Out of many, one people” can be freely translated as “one in the field is not a warrior”.

On August 6, 3 Orthodox church holidays are celebrated. The list of events informs about church holidays, fasting, days of veneration of the memory of saints. The list will help you find the date of a significant religious event for Orthodox Christians.

Church Orthodox Holidays August 6

Boris and Gleb

Martyrs of the Blessed Princes Boris (in the Holy Baptism of Roman) and Gleb (in the Holy Baptism of David).

Honoring the memory of the brothers Yaroslav the Wise Boris and Gleb (in the baptism of Roman and David). The saints were killed by the power-hungry brother Svyatopolk as rivals to the throne of Kiev. Their powers possess the gift of healing.

The holy noble princes, martyrs Boris and Gleb (in Holy Baptism, Roman and David) are the first Russian saints canonized by both the Russian and the Church of Constantinople. They were the youngest sons of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir (+ July 15, 1015). Born shortly before the Baptism of Russia, the holy brothers were raised in Christian piety. The eldest of the brothers, Boris, received a good education. He loved to read the Holy Scriptures, the creations of the holy fathers, and especially the lives of the saints. Under their influence, Saint Boris had a burning desire to imitate the feat of God's saints and often prayed that the Lord would honor him with such an honor.

From early childhood, St. Gleb was brought up with his brother and shared his desire to devote his life exclusively to serving God. Both brothers were distinguished by mercy and cordial kindness, imitating the example of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir, merciful and sympathetic to the poor, sick, destitute.

Even during the life of his father, Saint Boris received Rostov as an inheritance. Managing his principality, he showed wisdom and gentleness, taking care first of all of planting the Orthodox faith and affirming a pious lifestyle among his subjects. The young prince also became famous as a brave and skillful warrior. Shortly before his death, Grand Duke Vladimir called Boris to Kiev and sent him with an army against the Pechenegs. When the death of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir followed, his eldest son Svyatopolk, who was then in Kiev at that time, declared himself Grand Prince of Kiev.

Saint Boris at that time was returning from the campaign, never having met the Pechenegs, who were probably frightened of him and who had gone to the steppe. Upon learning of the death of his father, he was very upset. The team persuaded him to go to Kiev and take the princely throne, but the holy prince Boris, not wanting internecine strife, dismissed his army:

“I won’t raise my hands on my brother, and even on my elder, whom I should consider my father!”

However, the treacherous and power-hungry Svyatopolk did not believe Boris's sincerity; In an effort to protect himself from the possible rivalry of his brother, on whose side were the sympathies of the people and the troops, he sent killers to him. Saint Boris was informed of such treachery of Svyatopolk, but did not hide, and, like the martyrs of the first centuries of Christianity, he readily met death. The killers overtook him when he prayed for Sunday morning morning on July 24, 1015 in his tent on the banks of the Alta River. After the service, they broke into the tent to the prince and pierced him with spears. The beloved servant of the Holy Prince Boris - George Ugrin (originally a Hungarian) rushed to the defense of the master and was immediately killed.

But Saint Boris was still alive. Leaving the tent, he began to pray fervently, and then turned to the killers:

"Come, brethren, finish your service, and peace be upon brother Svyatopolk and you."

Then one of them came up and pierced him with a spear. The servants of Svyatopolk drove the body of Boris to Kiev, on the way they came across two Varangians sent by Svyatopolk to expedite the matter. The Varangians noticed that the prince was still alive, although he was barely breathing. Then one of them pierced his heart with a sword. The body of the holy martyr Prince Boris was secretly brought to Vyshgorod and laid in the church in the name of St. Basil the Great.

After this, Svyatopolk equally treacherously killed the holy Prince Gleb. Cunningly summoning a brother from his inheritance - Murom, Svyatopolk sent warriors to meet him to kill St. Gleb along the way. Prince Gleb already knew about the death of his father and the villainous murder of Prince Boris. Deeply grieving, he preferred death rather than war with his brother. The meeting of St. Gleb with the murderers took place at the mouth of the Smyadyn River, near Smolensk.

What was the feat of the holy noble princes Boris and Gleb? What is the point in this way - without resistance, to die at the hands of killers?

The life of the holy martyrs was sacrificed to the main Christian virtue - love. “He who says,“ I love God, ”but hates his brother, is a liar” (1 John 4, 20). The holy brothers did what was still new and incomprehensible to pagan Russia, accustomed to blood feud - they showed that evil cannot be repaid with evil, even under the threat of death. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but who cannot kill souls” (Matt. 10, 28). The holy martyrs Boris and Gleb gave their lives for the sake of observing the obedience on which the spiritual life of man and all life in society are based.

“You see, brethren,” reverend Saint Nestor the Chronicler, “how submissive is the elder brother?” If they resisted, they would hardly have been able to receive such a gift from God. There are many young princes now who do not submit to the elders and are killed for their resistance. But they are not likened to the grace that these saints have been honored. ”

The faithful princes of the martyrs did not want to raise a hand against their brother, but the Lord himself avenged the tyrant of tyranny: “Vengeance will be repaid to me and I will repay it” (Rom. 12, 19).

In 1019, Prince of Kiev Yaroslav the Wise, also one of the sons of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, gathered an army and defeated the squad of Svyatopolk. According to the providence of God, the decisive battle took place on the field near the Alta River, where Saint Boris was killed. Svyatopolk, called the Russian people Cursed, fled to Poland and, like the first fratricide killer Cain, did not find peace and refuge anywhere. Chroniclers testify that even from his grave came a stench.

“From that time,” the chronicler writes, “sedition has calmed down in Russia.” The blood shed by the holy brothers in order to prevent internecine strife was the blessed seed that strengthened the unity of Russia. The faithful princes, martyrs, are not only glorified from God by the gift of healings, but they are special patrons, defenders of the Russian land. Many cases of their occurrence are known in difficult times for our Fatherland. For example, St. Alexander Nevsky on the eve of the Battle of Ice (1242), Grand Duke Demetrius of Donskoy on the day of the Battle of Kulikovo (1380). The veneration of Saints Boris and Gleb began very early, shortly after their death. The service to the saints was compiled by Metropolitan of Kiev John I (1008-1035).

The Grand Duke of Kiev Yaroslav the Wise took care to find the remains of St. Gleb, who had been unburied for 4 years, and buried them in Vyshgorod, in the church in the name of St. Basil the Great, next to the relics of St. Prince Boris. After some time, this temple burned down, the relics remained unharmed, and many miracles were performed from them. One Varangian unknowingly stood on the grave of the holy brothers, and suddenly a burning flame seared his legs. The relics of the holy princes received the healing of a lame youth, the son of a resident of Vyshgorod: Saints Boris and Gleb appeared to the youth in a dream and overshadowed a sore leg with a cross. The boy woke from sleep and stood perfectly healthy.

The Right Prince Yaroslav the Wise built a five-domed stone temple on this site, which was consecrated on July 24, 1026 by the Metropolitan of Kiev John with a clergy council. Many churches and monasteries throughout Russia were dedicated to the holy princes Boris and Gleb, frescoes and icons of the holy martyr brothers are also known in numerous churches of the Russian Church.

Martyrs Christine of Tire

Celebrating the memory of St. Christina, betrayed by cruel torment by several rulers of the city of Tire in the 3rd century for her faith in Christ the Savior.

Christina lived at the turn of the 2nd – 3rd centuries in Tire of Phoenician under the emperor Septimius Severus (194–211). Her father was a powerful pagan warlord named Urvan. Jealously guarding the dazzling beauty of his daughter, he imprisoned her in a high tower, where she served many slaves and she could enjoy all the benefits of luxury and wealth. In this tower, Urvan placed statues of the gods, adorned with jewelry so that her daughter could worship them.
Although the virgin remained locked up, without any connection with the world, the grace of God visited Christina and engendered in her soul a desire to know the truth. With her truthful mind, she realized that soulless statues - the work of human hands - cannot be deities in any way, and, contemplating the beauty of heaven, earth and all the wonders of nature in a window, she came to the conclusion that such a beautiful harmony can only be created by one God and Creator, infinitely wise. Then an angel of the Lord was sent to the virgin, instructing her in that which she dimly felt in her heart — in the secrets of the Divine and creation. Thus, having acquired the light of truth and filled with zealous love for God, Christine devoted her life to fasting and prayer.

When her parents came to visit her and offered to worship the idols, she answered with a firm refusal, announcing that she was now following Christ, the true Light that had come into the world. She rejected all the persuasions of her father and asked to give her a white shirt to bring a spiritual sacrifice to God, the One in Three Persons. Urban fulfilled the request of his daughter, not understanding her essence. When Christina plunged into prayer, an angel appeared, greeting her as the bride of Christ, and announced the forthcoming trials with which she would glorify the Lord. Before leaving, he marked the virgin with the seal of Christ, blessed and satiated with heavenly bread.

At night, the saint with an ax chopped up all the statues in the tower and went to distribute the wreckage of silver and gold to the poor. Seeing this the next morning, Urvan was terribly angry and ordered that the slaves of Christina beheaded, and that her daughter be scourged. Twelve soldiers sacked the maiden to exhaustion, but Christine remained unshakable by the power of grace, confessing Christ and blaming her father. Urvan ordered her to be thrown into prison, bound in heavy chains, and left. His wife, in tears, visited the dungeon to entreat Christine to submit and thereby save her life. But these persuasions did not bring results.

The next day, Christina was again tortured. First, flesh was torn to her, and then tied to a wheel and hung over a burning hearth, but through her prayer the Lord extinguished the flame. Once again sent to prison, she was honored with a visit to three angels who delivered her food and healed her wounds.

At night, Urvan sent five slaves. They grabbed the saint, tied a heavy stone around her neck and threw it into the sea. But even then the angels came to the aid of the martyr: they untied the stone, and Christina went through the waters like a dry land. A shining cloud descended from heaven - and Christ appeared, dressed in precious royal robes and surrounded by a host of angels who praised the Lord with hymns and filled the air with a delicate fragrance of incense. Fulfilling the desire of the saint, Christ Himself baptized her in the waters of the sea, and then entrusted the archangel Michael, who accompanied Christine to the land and to the parental home.

Finding that the girl had survived, despite all the attempts to kill her, Urvan ordered the next day to behead her. But that very night he died in a deplorable way.

Urvan's post was taken by the new magistrate Dion. After reviewing the case, he called on the saint and ordered him to be tortured. She held fast. Then he ordered her hair cut and nude all over the city to cover with shame. The next day, the martyr pretended to agree to fulfill the demand of Dion and wants to bow to the statue of Apollo. Arriving at the temple, she prayed to the true God and ordered the statue to walk forty steps. However, even such a miracle did not convert Dion. Then the saint, calling on the name of God, overturned the statue and broke it into pieces. Three thousand pagans, witnesses of a miracle, turned to Christ.

Dion did not survive such a defeat and soon died, and his place was taken by a new ruler, Julian. He enclosed the saint in a red-hot oven. The martyr spent five days there, during which she sang praises to the Lord with the angels. Then the ruler ordered her to be thrown into a moat full of wild animals and poisonous reptiles, but even there no evil touched God's slaves: the Aspids curled up at her feet, as if wanting to bow to her, and the snakes gently wiped the sweat from her forehead. Only Julian was more ferocious than predatory creatures, and persisted in hatred for the martyr. He ordered her breasts to be cut off, from which blood and milk surged, and then to tear out her tongue. After all the torment, two warriors pierced the heart and side of the saint with spears, giving her a crown of incorruptible victory and eternal bliss in contemplating the Heavenly Bridegroom.

After the imminent death of a tyrant, one of Christina's relatives, who was converted thanks to her miracles, laid the body of the saint in a church erected in her memory.

The Monk Polycarp of the Caves, Archimandrite

Commemoration Day of Hegumen of the Pechersk Monastery Polycarp. The relics of the saint rest in the Near (Anthony) caves.

Blessed and laudable Polycarp - prolific by name - was prolific in his good deeds; he brought that plentiful fruit, which the Heavenly Worker said: “If a grain of wheat, falling into the ground, does not die, then there will be only one; but if he dies, he will bear much fruit ”(John 12.24), and also:“ he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit ”(John.15: 5). This blissful fleeting glory and the image of this world were counted to dust and, having taken the holy monastic monastic image in a monastery famous for caves, like a grain on a plowed land, he killed his body in every possible way through fasting deeds, spirit always being in God.

Thus, he created many fruits worthy of repentance, and showed himself all the fruits of the spirit: the love of hypocrisy for God and brotherhood, the joy of an immaculate conscience, the world of victory over all passions, patience in misfortunes and sorrows, kindness in obedience to all, mercy in heart care for the poor, unshakable faith in the fulfillment of the commandments, true in the fulfillment of vows, meekness in ignorance of anger, abstinence from food and drink, plentiful and tasty, and generally from all bodily passions (cf. Gal. 5: 22-23).

God brought all these fruits to blessed Polycarp, and planted St. Simon, bishop of Vladimir and Suzdal. The latter was a blood relative to him and did not want Polycarp to move away from him with his spirit, but, like a good root, he also tried to grow a good branch. Therefore, when Simon himself was appointed from the Pechersk monastery to the throne of the Vladimir and Suzdal diocese, he took with him the blessed Polycarp; there he encouraged Polycarp to live a virtuous life, and for this he conducted soulful conversations with him that he himself had read or heard in eyewitnesses' conversations about the old holy monks of Pechersk, about what hard labors they bore, and how they pleased God so much that even here they shone with the miraculous incorruption of their relics, as a sign of their receiving an incorruptible crown in heaven.

And Blessed Polycarpus, plowing the land of his heart with obedience and sowing the seeds of fatherly instruction there, brought the fruit a hundredfold. He not only himself was prolific in virtue, but also in all Orthodox wanted to root the same fruitfulness. Therefore, what he heard from the blessed Bishop Simon about the charitable deeds of the reverend fathers of the Pechersk, he bothered to write all this to the benefit of others who were saved; thus, living with that blessed bishop, he set forth the wondrous lives of many saints in his letter to blessed Akindin, archimandrite of the Caves; these lives are placed in the second part of the Kiev-Pechersk Paterik.

Subsequently, Blessed Polycarp, although he bodily parted with his father and mentor Simon, returned from his bishopric again to the Pechersk monastery, but by his virtue he did not leave that holy man: he rooted his old teachings well and tried to keep and return them . And Saint Simon, for his part, did not cease to teach him here with his written message, full of inspired instructions and descriptions of the virtuous life of the Pechersk saints. Always having this message before his eyes, Blessed Polycarp wrote down all the fatherly words on the tablets of his heart, read them with his mind and executed them in practice. So strictly striving, he achieved a high degree of virtue.

When the blessed Akindin, the archimandrite of the Caves, carefully and piously grazing the flock of Christ, reached a very old age and after long-term labors moved to the Lord for eternal rest, then there was no other elder and more experienced in monastic feats except Polycarp in the chosen number of holy brethren. Therefore, the entire regiment of the good warriors of Christ unanimously and unanimously chose to be the leaders and tutors of this blessed one, as worthy and able to manage the helm of the holy great laurel of the Blessed Virgin Mary and our venerable fathers Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves; it was under the Grand Duke of Kiev Rostislav Mstislavich, under Metropolitan John, the fourth metropolitan of this name and the third field of Metropolitan Klim, consecrated by the head of St. Clement.

Having taken command over the holy great Pechersk Lavra, Blessed Polycarp tried diligently to preserve all the monastic charters laid down by the Monk Theodosius, without adding anything (an outsider) to them. He proved to be a skilful leader in the cause of salvation; this really was required by the miraculous laurel and was famous for it. Everywhere there was fame for her deanery under the command of Blessed Polycarp. Many of the noble and sovereign princes used his instructions and strove for a virtuous life, so they left their glorious thrones out of a desire to live with him, a vivid example of which is the ever-memorable Kiev prince Rostislav Mstislavich.

This Christ-lover, always setting himself the lifestyle of Blessed Polycarp, established such a good custom: during Lent every Saturday and Sunday, he invited twelve Pechersk monks and the thirteenth Blessed Archimandrite Polycarp to his dinner, and, feeding them, did not let go empty-handed . And every Sunday he communed with divine secrets, praying with tears, a sigh of heart and groans, so that no one who saw him in such tenderness could not help but cry. When the holy Great Lent ended, then on Saturday Lazarev the Christ-loving prince convened all the Pechersk blessed elders, who shone with fasting feat, treated them all cordially, endowed them with alms, and released them with honor.

In the same way, he convened and treated the brethren and other monasteries, but especially the Pechersk brethren, because he loved the virtuous life of all of them and, for the most part, their blessed mentor Polycarpus, who imitated Anthony and Theodosius, the original clergymen in every way. The prince therefore often spoke to the blessed one to accept him among the monks of the Pechersk monastery. But Blessed Polycarp answered him: - A pious prince! God told you to lead a different life - to rule, to do a righteous judgment and strictly observe the cross kissing. And Prince Rostislav objected to him: - Holy Father! the reign of this world cannot be without sin, and it already bothered me and bore me with its daily cares, therefore I would like to serve God at least a little in old age and imitate those princes and kings who followed a narrow and difficult path and reached the kingdom of heaven.

To these words, Blessed Polycarp said: - Christ-loving prince! if you want it with all your heart, then God's will be done. Although the prince did not manage to carry out this intention, it is clear from the following that he had a really warm hearted desire, and was born under the influence of the good example of St. Polycarp. When the prince became very ill in Smolensk and ordered himself to be taken to Kiev, his sister Rogneda, seeing that his brother was so weak, asked him: “Stay here in Smolensk, and here we will put you in our church.”

He answered her: - Please do not do so, but even if I am very weak, still let me take me to Kiev; if God takes me along the way, then let my body be laid in the monastery of St. Theodore, built by my father; if God will deliver me from this disease, then I promise to get a haircut as a monk in the holy Pechersk monastery under Blessed Polycarp. Then, when his illness intensified, and he was already at death, he said to his spiritual father, priest Simeon: -

You will answer God for not allowing me to have a haircut at that holy man in the Pechersky Monastery: I ardently desired this, and God forgive me the sin that I did not fulfill the vow!

So he accepted a blissful demise. The beginning and the reason for such a virtuous life of the ever-memorable prince was nothing but an example of ascetic life and the inspired conversation of the reverend father of our Polycarp, who was in his reign the worthy head of the holy miraculous Pechersk Lavra; captivating not only the brethren, but also the pious laity with his virtuous example, he set them on the path of repentance and salvation. So carefully he grazed the flock handed to him by God. He lived for a long time and in extreme old age appeared before the Lord in 6690 from the creation of the world, and from the Nativity of Christ in 1182, July 24, on the feast of the holy martyrs, Russian princes Boris and Gleb. They clothed his body and buried with honor with the holy fathers.

After his death, a great difficulty arose in the monastery: the brethren could not imagine a new abbot. Although many of the blessed elders were worthy of such a rank, but not one wanted to accept it in their humility and vow of silence: it seemed better for them to be in obedience and to be in solitude, so that their treasures of virtue, collected by hard work, would not be wasted in worries and sorrows who are usually inseparable from the rule. The brethren grieved and mourned bitterly: it was impossible for such a large flock to be without a shepherd for an hour. On Tuesday hit a beater; all the brethren gathered in the church and began to pray for their needs to the Most Holy Theotokos and the venerable fathers Anthony and Theodosius, calling for the help of the ascetic - the newly-blessed blessed Polycarp and asking him to beg God to show them hegumen in his place, and through that would show if he pleased Lord, or not.

A miracle happened: as if with one mouth, many immediately said: - Let's go to the pious priest Vasily to Shchekovitsa, let him be our abbot and rule the monks of the Pechersky monastery. Everyone came with a bow to the priest Vasily and said: “We all, brothers of the Pechersky Monastery, bow to you and want you to be our fathers and abbess!” Priest Vasily was very amazed, bowed to them in turn with an earthly bow and said: “Holy Fathers!” I thought only of monasticism; where am I unworthy to be abbot. And he refused for a long time, until he finally yielded to their insistent requests.

Then the brethren took him with them to the monastery. On Friday, His Grace Metropolitan Nikifor of Kiev and God-loving bishops arrived at the tonsure of this chosen Basil by God: Laurentius of Turov and Nikolai Polotsky, and all the honorable abbesses: His Grace Metropolitan Nikifor tonsured his own hand. So he became the head and good shepherd of the monks of the holy Pechersky monastery after his prayers, he was for everyone a model of virtues, in glory and honor to the heavenly Mentor and Head of the shepherds, the Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, to Him with the beginningless Father and the Most Holy, Good and the Life-giving Spirit, befitting from all creation ceaseless glorification and worship, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.
